That's nonsense.

It is a terrible injury and obviously you feel sorry for him but he did it himself trying to recover his bad backpass.

He was still hobbling when he played it, ran back and completely ruined himself - if he was already feeling pain in the same ankle before that and went in for a 50/50 chance is his leg wasn't right to begin with.

Either way, Everton curse continues.
