Christmas and the New Year are a tough time in the Premier League. There are extra matches over Christmas. The FA Cup comes in the New Year, with the possibility of replays too. The Premier League games are squeezed into midweek. On top of all this, we've got home and away legs in the League Cup semifinals - with the opportunity to appear in the final.
This load takes its toll - we finished the match with ten men on Wednesday. Barry, Barkley and Lukaku have had a much harder season than Besic. And without McCarthy, Coleman and Cleverley, things will be even more difficult.
So what should we do - play the first team players whenever they are fit, or spread our resources over the coming games? Do we focus on the semifinal, and rest players before the second leg? City, of course, have a much stronger squad than we do. But they also face stronger competition tomorrow than we do. We really would be struggling if we faced Premier League opposition in the FA Cup.
It's one thing to be beaten by a better team. It's quite another to be beaten by fatigue.
