Everton Youth Teams Thread

Keith Southern was mentioning on the commentary about 12 injuries, which if you add to those who have gone out on loan/in first team squad, means there were young players out of position.

I was under the impression that, after our 'golden generation' U23s, we had a few mediocre classes coming up. So given that both the U23s and U18s don't seem to have done too badly over the season.

Heavy defeat that.

Been a very meh season for the U23s by and large, probably due to all of the best players graduating.

Very true, except I'd remove the word 'probably'. Of the team that won the league last year, only Hewelt and Feeney have played regularly, with the latter currently injured.

Some of the new signings, though, have shown very little, while others have done ok without being outstanding. Certainly, none of them pushing for a place in the 1st team squad.

Also not helped by the bizarre persistence with players who surely have no future here.

Final score Everton u18s 0 Sunderland 2

This was the u18s 4th defeat in 7,and we have had only 1 win in that 7 -[7-0 v newcastle] since that derby 3-1 u18s win were we got battered the whole game pretty much,Everton stay in 3rd place one point above man city [city won 5-0 today] who have 2 games in hand

Much like our 1st team, everyone in the youth set up must just wish the season was over.

Its certainly been a season to forget for most of the senior teams.
The future looks great
I understand your sentiments, and you have to look hard to find the positives , but it’s not all gloom and doom for the future. Results are not everything and from last year’s PL2 winners there was a whole core of players who were never going to make it with us - McAleny, Grant, Duffus, Dyson , Henen etc , add in the departed Liam Walsh too.

A few years ago we used to talk about being pleased to get one youngster through to the first team from each year’s intake. Then our “golden generation” got us excitedly talking about 3, 4 coming through in a year. In practice , the reality is we have achieved 1 per year this season in terms of a decent amount of games played and coming through our Academy - Kenny, and then from the following year Davies. ( This leaves aside the on loan players for now).

So if we look at the years following on from Davies we’re not in a bad position to achieve “ 1 coming through from the Academy per year”. One year down from Davies we have Morgan Feeney and Beni Benigime who have played first team minutes but not established themselves yet. ( Antony Evans hasn’t really pushed on but let’s not rule him out completly ). Two years down , in what is recognised as a poor intake, we have Alex Denny and Fraser Hornby who’ve both tasted first team minutes in Europe and established themselves in the U23s . Three years down , 1st year Scholars, we have the exciting Anthony Gordon , another who got Europe first team minute(s) , Michael Collins who was in the Europa squad and an unspectacular but talented Elliott Richards. Then four years down we have 4 or 5 Schoolboys who have played at u18s , the most for a few years, including 16 year old Ryan Astley our first Schoolboy to play at U23s level . Astley is scarily talented for a 16 year old, and like the other Schoolboys we need to see how they develop , but the promise appears to be there.

You could throw in two non-Academy recruits in 17 year old Lewis Gibson, and 19 year old Nathangelo Markelo who have had good seasons too. So overall , while results haven’t been good this season , there are a few promising youngsters in each year ..... just need one per year to make it.

Yep, one player makes it and reality is it's a saving of anywhere from 5m-15m spent on a player from elsewhere.

We'd certainly fetch a decent amount for Davies imo

Edit : not that I want to sell him!
