Interesting match - these games are good in that you see who is able to make a difference when things are going badly - and who has the skill to do so.

Thought many of our lads just weren't that interested in the second half when Oldham started getting into them with the second-ball challenges. So many weak jumps for headers that they knew they were out of position for.

Oldham manager looked like he was having a good chat with Unsworth at the end about Broadhead, who he then went and had a word in his ear.

Hard to take any positives from a poor second half performance. Adeniran was the pick of our players. Bowler looked lively when he came on , still coming back to full fitness after injury to answer an earlier question.
I thought Feeney started the second half well , winning a number of headers but was outmuscled for the second goal. It shows the difficulty of getting a decent loan for young defenders, they need experience but will make mistakes , so often they don’t get picked on loan.
Hewelt was poor, didn’t command his area, was at fault for the third goal and arguably the first one too , if he had been more dominant. Time to make Virginia the main young GK and play him as much as possible in these gams. Sambou didnt offer much either , similarly its time to give Simms more game time up front. Kyle John did ok at right back but we may be better getting in the Oldham right back , 18 year old Tom Hamer come January.

It’s a learning experience for these kids , so mustn’t be too harsh but it does show how far they are collectively from challenging for the first team squad.

How did Lavery do?

Why do we collapse in this competition
I think the game changed when Oldham brought a couple of very experienced old hands on for the second half, we couldn't cope with them and they had too much know for our younger players, the referee gave them (Oldham) a lot of encouragement, letting a lot of fouls go by without blowing up, Mr. Drysdale was his name, kept expecting Norman Wisdom to be running after him. !!!Older fans might know what I'm talking about.

we should be scouting that Oldham right back big time.

absolute devil of a throw on him too.

I did realise Hewlett was in goal, no disrespect to the lad, but he’s seems to make at least one mistake every time he plays.

Browning and Adeniran the standout players for me from that first half. I'd be amazed if a lower league club didn't come in for Browning given his size and experience so far - I suppose it's a question of what he is looking for. First time I've really seen John play, not doing bad at all at right back.

Like Griffiths has mentioned a couple of times, the Oldham youngster Hamer is impressive for 18 years old (also a decent size for a right back).

@argietoffee the link is here

...your comments regarding Browning totally mirror mine after the last game where I thought he was also a stand-out. I can see him being very much in demand in January.

Open-age football is the real test for these promising youngsters. It’s far different when they come out of the comfort zone of their own age group. It’s why Dowell’s performances at Forest last season in what was his first proper experience of open-age have to be taken in perspective.

We really don’t know until they step out of ring-fenced football. It supports the argument for the old Central League reserve competition.

This is from last July , haven’t heard anything since , but we were apparently battling it out with City for a young England u15 player Omari Forson . He’s currently down as unattached having left Spurs , I’m not sure of the details of this though. He’s appeared in the England u15 team photo in the middle of our current players Thierry Small and Mohamed Ali Cho . Opportunity wise you’d think we’d be the better option , money wise City May have it.
