Everton Youth Teams Thread

Thing is though, Ryan Astley is only 17. He's not going to suffer massively from not playing every under 23 game between now and January, in fact if anything it's probably best that he doesn't. If he was 19 and knocking on the first team door than i'd agree, but at this point he's already got a lot more under 23 exposure than he probably would have expected.

I am rather acquiescent on this issue though I know it annoys people. My view will always be it should be a challenge to get into the reserve team, and if they have to work that bit harder it will probably not do them too much harm.

I'd also say, there is some strong evidence that being out of the team perhaps does players some good. Broadhead took a long time to be given an opportunity, but since he's came in has done very well and seems to be progressing well on loan too. Gordon is really kicking on this year, despite not having much game time last year. I remember Unsworth saying about Broadhead he had to do a lot of physical work, and it's clear a lot of effort is put into bulking lads up, which isn't always conducive around playing 30+ games a season.

For an under 18 now, they have to be very good to get into that reserve/under 23 team. It's filled with lads who are consistent in their performance, and for that level perform to a good standard. It's a good challenge. If they are going to be good enough for Everton, in all honesty they need to be displaying they are significantly better than Harry Charley even as an 18 year old.

As a final aside, as a club our issue has been, for some time how these players kick on when they get into the first team squad. Thats the area I have most concern of.

Ring master is Doyle who scored the penalty any relation to Mike Doyle who played for City in the sixties? I’ve got a feeling he could be his grandson.
Grandson of former stars Mike Doyle and Glyn Pardoe

Doyle joined the club at the age of four and has always been a stand out in City's youth sides, claiming several trophies at various different age levels. He's won plenty of individuals gongs too, claiming the Premier League Player of the Tournament for three successive years, for example.

He graduated to the U18s side when still just 16 and represented City in the UEFA Youth League in the 2017/18 season, as well as making his debut for the EDS.

He suffered a serious foot injury in 2018 which kept him out of action for six months but City showed their faith in the prospect by signing him up to a first professional contract on his 17th birthday.

Upon his return from the injury he scored a free-kick against Liverpool in the FA Youth Cup and, even though he wasn't medically allowed to play the full 9-minutes, there was no hesitation of him being thrown back into the action.

Doyle went from strength to strength in 2019, becoming a regular fixture of the EDS side competing in the Premier League 2, culminating in being invited to join the first-team squad this pre-season.

His talents have been recognised on the international stage, having represented England at every level between U15-U18 and often captaining his country.
