Everton Youth Teams Thread

Hosie was captain, but it sort of goes to show, if you still have moved up by the end of the under 18's you will be gone. I think we've needed this more stern approach for some time now. If you don't move people on, you don't create the pathways for those who follow. It looks like we are going down the right path again now (where we were traditionally amongst the youngest in both the under 23's and under 18's).

From my understanding the 17's and particularly 16's are the strongest age group we've had for a few years. Obvious comparisons to the Dowell/Davies age group that came through probably 6/7 years ago. This is the strongest age group since then, possibly stronger.

I was thinking about that age group a bit recently. We were very close to having a number break through. The takeover and following instability happened at completely the wrong time for them. You look at Davies, Kenny, Dowell, Ledson, Walsh, Connolly, Williams, Robinson and they've all established themselves at championship level but with the exception of Kenny/Davies not much beyond that. I think it shows how close we were to having a breakthrough of 5 or 6. Maybe under a different manager, without spending all that money etc we might have seen some have more exposure at an earlier age and maybe take that opportunity.

The current 16/17's to me have a similar number of potential players, and the question becomes are we better set now to begin to integrate and develop them. While I doubt you will ever get through, it would be lovely to have 3 or 4 come through int the squad.

Do you think this is us starting to see brands' stamp with regards to the ruthleness. Like you say, it's good to see, i find it absurd the players we have kept onto well into their twenties when they've never going to have been good enough bar a place on the bench if 6 players are injured in their position.

Fans will think feeney is avstrange one, being captain etc, but he's coming on 22 and he's about 8th choice for 2 positions.

When we see a 27 year old garbutt, with Pennington, browning, galloway, ledson, walsh etc they're players still with us at 23/24. We definitely need to be more ruthleness and make decisions on them quicker without handing out such long contracts.

Your thinking of Hughes mate, Hosie was never captain , you’re right though the best players start to show signs early and move up early , though some like Quirk only progress in their 2nd year. That’s why this years intake has so much promise , many have already played at u18 level.

Any reason why Sims isn’t being given a place on the bench recently
Simms has been training with the first team , which is about right. For me he’s our most improved U23s player this year , even ignoring the goals he’s scored his whole hold up play, control, bringing others into the game even heading has improved. He’s bullying U23s defenders it’s whether he can eventually do the same at PL level , that’s what coaching is about as he doesn’t have the natural ability of Gordon .
In some ways the ridiculous hype 18 months ago still counts against him, many of us on here rightly laughed then , and he can be easily dismissed now because of it. DCL didn’t really play u21/23 for any time so for me Simms is the best out and out striker we’ve had at this level in years. I’m still rooting for him....well until we sell him to Bolton anyway.

Quirk has really gone under the radar and had most of the season with the 23's. I must admit he wasn't a name you saw mentioned much but he's done really well.

You are right about this years 16's, about 7 or 8 of them have had involvement with the 18's, which is remarkable really.

I think thats exactly right. It strikes me as Brands beginning to step in and clear space for players to come through. You look at Gordon for example and it's only right he had a run this season, was promoted, is now getting some opportunities in the first team and going well. Thats sort of how you want it to be.

I see Manasse Mampala and Korede Adedoyin have been added to the list of players we knew were going to be released , plus Kieran Phillips once his loan at Huddersfield expires.
Adeydoyin is a bit hard done by given he was put out on a virtually impossible to predict loan at Hamilton where he had little chance of making a step up to their first team.
Sad to see him go in this way , @Nymzee and I had a friendly bet prior to the season started when I said Simms would do better for us than Adeydoin. I remember it even if he doesn’t , but not the outcome I would have wanted for Adeydoyin.

Yeh I think the Hamilton loan really ruined his chances stuck up there on the arty pitches. Still a very talented boy I'm sure he'll make it at some level.

Markelo has signed a new contract, not sure how long for. Hes 21 now so surely they must think he can make the grade next season?

Needs to go out on loan next season at a Championship club. I would also hope both Gibson and Adeniran get loans at that level if they aren't going to be in first team squad no point playing them u23s. Ideally Premier League butnone bad game and they might not get back in and end up wasting a season like Galloway.

Ledson left a week after his 19th birthday abd Walsh not long after his 20th

Based on the players we have left now this would be my U23 team.

Tryer
John Astley Branthwaite Anderson
Hunt Iversen Onyango Quirk
Simms Dobbin

Basically use Anderson to tuck in as 3rd centre back and have John push on so mirror image of first team. Hunt would tuck in as he is more of a 10 anyways Iversen the holding midfielder and Onyango the box to box. Quirk is a bit of a utility player so would play left hand side and it allows Simms and Dobbin to play as a front 2 like DCL and Richarlison. The Bench would be Hansen, Ouzounidis, Hughes, Carroll, Cannon. It would be a very young team 4 2nd year pro, 5 1st year pro, 2 2nd year scholars. Bench would be 1 3rd year pro, 1 2nd year pro, 2 1st year pro, 1 2nd year scholar. It would mean there would be chances to move up from U18 through season if players impress at that level.

Interesting! My big concern is that from past years we’re likely to start with a bunch of older players searching for loans or whom we dont know what to do with e.g. Connolly, Nathan Broadhead, Adeniran , Markelo , Ouzounidis, Bowler , maybe even Beni and Gibson .
I saw somewhere that the average age of the PL2 U23s is about 20, so we should be able to hold our own even with such a young side. I guess Unsworth could revert to his 5-5 formation if we struggle though.

...I actually wonder about him as a RB. i can’t recall seeing him in that position so the club can’t be considering it, but he’s a good shape and runner for a RB.
His first season here he played mainly right back for the 23s as we didn’t have anyone else there, did well I think but they wanted to move him back to cm
