Everton Youth Teams Thread

I absolutely agree that some of the older professionals were probably forced on him. It's just I sometimes looked at the teams gevws picking and it was nothing like the first team set up and it's only recently the teams have been more aligned.

I know not many have come back to bite us but I wonder if by the time we release them they have missed their window for development. I'm hopeful this new policy will produce the goods.

....I think the best benchmark of Academy quality is FA Youth Cup, at U18 level. I’ve watched lots of our teams in that competition as far back as Jimmy Husband and John Hurst in 1965. The teams who win that competition invariably have a top player or two. We won it with Hibbert, Osman, Cadermarteri et al, we even got to the final with an ordinary team that included Wayne Rooney.

It’s been a while since we got to the latter stages of that high profile competition. Folk tend to pick holes in U23s because it’s what they see, but the issues might be further back in the process.

I think this is my problem. I remember the consecutuve years that produced Ball, Dunne, Cadamarteri, Jeffers, Osman, Hibbert. I think they all played at least 50 games for us. I know times were different and our first team wasn't as good but they were all good players. There were others as well who got a couple of appearances here and there.

....I watched so much of that outstanding crop coming through, even the likes of Jevons and O’Hanlon had lengthy careers in the game.

A lot of the issues might be cultural. When I was brought up in the 50s/60s all we did was okay street footy. You unknowingly honed skills by constantly being in possession of a football and many of us played representative football and got signed by professional clubs. We rarely see kids playing footy now, I always say Rooney might have been the last of the street footballers.

Can't say i'm not envious of other teams and their ability to bring in young players who make an impact,i don't pretend to have the knowledge of our youth set up like some on here but i don't get the impression of a real talent about to make the breakthrough.I look back at the buzz that Cadamarterie,Anichebe,Jeffers,Vaughan and of course Rooney and wonder when will we get to see that again, maybe this change of policy fastracking U18 to the U23's will be of benefit to the 1st team eventually.....Seen Nathan Tella a few times for Southampton, looks like a real prospect and only 17,a a case of getting the chance and seizing it...

which teams mate?

Yep , I was a street footballer, no cars, pass off the curb to get out of tight spaces. Six years ago I started playing Walking Football in a large hall , using walls in the same way. You should try it mate , its surprising how quickly the old skills come back. :) .

haha fair play. As long as you out involved you are doing well pal. I went back after few years off and was loving till this crap all kicked off. Keeping myself in shape to get back soon hopefully.

Love that saying alright :)

That lad of 70 still has a fantastic first touch and his passing is sublime even when we play on grass outdoors
