Everton Youth Teams Thread

Mills is a really interesting one. You obviously note he had a dad who played. We can quibble the ethics, but it does often make a difference, in terms of physique and attitude for a player.

In honesty he was nowhere near it. He couldn't get a game for the 18's and Mallon (a year older) seemed to be making progress. I don't know if Mallon is injured or Mills have jumped the cue but he looks the man in possession currently.

He has grown a fair bit over the last 6 months. He looks approaching 6 ft to me now, which makes a big difference. It sort of differentiates him from John and Kenny, who in their own way were both probably held back by size and athletic ability.

….I’m old and recall scouts eager to meet parents to gauge how their sins would turn out. I remember meeting Richard Dunne’s parents at Bellefield, you wouldn’t like to be in a queue for the spuds in their house. Rooney similar, great physicality, particularly on his Mums side.

I too noticed Mills size, he’s a very decent looking athlete and I wonder if anybody at the club is thinking about him as a RB.

Whilst it’s good to get them minutes it shouldn’t be there; they’ve all outgrown it. Playing them there takes minutes away from the even younger lads which has been an issue for as long as I can remember till around halfway through last season. These lads have to be playing an age up.
I agree with you there. It is an interesting balance between game time for older players and pushing through younger ones - Unsworth was clearly frustrated that he gave some of the older players a go and they didn’t perform . I think ( hope!) next time he’ll look to bring in 1st years/ schoolboys in one of these cups. Leeds u21 got pumped 4-1 in the EFL trophy the other night, but had a 15 year old featuring who became the youngest player in the competition’s history to get an assist . A great achievement if you’ve got the talent to do it, although I suspect if it happened at our club most would just look at the scoreline and blame Unsworth/ Brands.

Yeh it's one of those where some people think if the youth teams aren't winning games, leagues & cups the talent isn't there where for me results don't really matter as much as development. Except maybe the Youth Cup where we do want to impress there.

That process began earlier , and the last two games he’s started at u21/23 Mills has had a 2 on his back, beginning as a wing back , reverted to RB when we went to a back four.

I want to win games in EFL trophy as it will allow us to play more games in that competition. I'm quite happy in the league games it being for younger players to develop just make sure we don't get relegated. I'm glad we have no McAleny types any more but I still think there is a place for slightly older players. Ideally I would have sent John, Astley, Hughes and Iversen out on loan. Anderson I would only have kept due to lack of LBs. I'm almost certain Hunt and Quirk will be released at the end of the season. I also think Kristiensen and Hagan will go as they have had no game time and Welch and Campbell ahead. Onyango is another interesting one hopefully once fit he'll train with the first team and play in the u23s.

…I love a converted winger at FB. They invariably have real quality on the ball, they invariably possess pace & it’s largely a matter of learning to defend. Modern day wingers are expected to track back, I think it’s a positive opportunity for Mills.

Also his dad was a decent RB so I'm sure he will be a good place to go for advice. I just hope he avoids injuries as Kyle John was the same but he seems to be injury prone and his chance as probably passed. Mills looked a mile away even from the u18s this time last year and now I think he is probably soon going to be first choice u23 RB.

…the downside for him is the distinct possibility of signing a RB in January. He needs to demonstrate he has similar potential to Patterson et al in the next few months.

Fingers crossed we don't sign Patterson but if we sign an older player that is first choice in 18 months when Coleman retires that should hopefully create a space as back up and he'll be about 19/20 then which is a good age. Kenny will be gone in the summer at the latest so we need someone in but if it's Patterson I think it would be a risk having to such young RBs. If he can also play on the wing makes him a useful squad player.

We have scouted Ramsay an 18 year old at Aberdeen as well as Patterson whether it will be a priority in Jan we will have to wait and see
