Mills has been played inside a bit more recently when we’ve used wing backs , as opposed to playing wider in a 4231 format, it’s increased his versatility. He still makes strong runs out wide , goes direct for goal as well as crosses, but he also played a cute inside ball from the middle to set Simms up with a great chance. He’s getting into space inside the box to finish and score plus scoring from 20 yards. When he scored and was surrounded by our players , you could see he’s a good height too, strong body and looks robust when he runs with the ball, which can be deceptive as he’s quite speedy , but not as “ easy on the eye” as say Gordon and Dobbin who’s pace seems sharper and more obvious , if that makes sense.
Our policy change of playing the youngsters in the U23s earlier is paying dividends for Mills, he’s probably played more games than Gordon did at the same age already this season. Whereas Gordon was the standout in his year there are 3or 4 others ( Welch, Price, Whitaker, Campbell) who have also got peoples attention in his year, but you’d have to say he’s also earned a call to “train with the first team“ sometimes while continuing his development at U23s.
