Everton Youth Teams Thread

Not writing him off at all, still very young... he seems decent and good on the ball. Have just seen people put him in the first team squad for next season as a back up for the starters, but he looks way off that.
That’s always a problem with youngsters like Welch, some over-promote them , which often results oddly enough in a backlash against them.

Nobody it seems bothered to read or comment on the article I mentioned, sorry I couldn’t link it. He comes over as a grounded 18 year old who’s targets are training with the first team and the U19s Euros with England, not unreasonable. I’m not really sure what people are expecting of an 18 year old . Very few centre backs have sufficient maturity until into their 20s to push for a regular first team place. What I see in Welch is someone who marshalls the defence in u18 games , is more comfortable now playing out from the back which he wasn’t a year ago, when he gets his positioning wrong he is often athletic enough to rectify the situation and has looked comfortable playing in a back 3 and in both CB positions in a back four. Again , I’m not sure what people are expecting of an 18 year old.

….those comments are entirely fair, I was just looking for him to be supreme this season. Clearly that expectation is too high, but I wanted him to be a nightmare to play against but I have to say he’s disappointed me. When I say disappointed me, I mean in relation to my expectation.

For him to look better than the other 18-year old CB’s in that league.

Well that’s a fair enough comment , which suggests you’ve seen a number of “ other 18 year old. CB’s in that league” that look better than him. Can you give us a list of all these 18 year CB s that look better than him ? I’d genuinely be interested in who you’ve spotted , as my perception is that there aren’t that many 18 year old CBs playing week in week out in that league .

Here‘s my take. I’m happy to admit I haven’t seen all these 18 year old CB s you’ve seen , but he’s played up last November for England U20s when only 18 , as well as being a regular for the u19s . That to me suggests he’s rated by selectors as one of the best 18 year old CBs in England. Of course at 18 he’s far away from making it , maybe it’s just poor England selection and as I said I await your list of better 18 yr old CB s with interest.

You seem strangely angry that some people on here don’t rate him as highly as you seemingly do.

Offiah at Brighton, Brooking at Chelsea, Colwill at Hudds (from Chelsea), the young lad at Peterborough, Edwards, Hjelde at Leeds already getting first team minutes. Just a few off the top of my head that have impressed me more. Plus a fair number in Europe.

Haha , not angry amused. It’s a Forum , which means people have different opinions . I posted a pretty simple sentence saying there was a good article on him on the OS. There was no opinion from me good, bad , indifferent or an indication of how I rated him. Three people then wrote negatively about him , including your “ meh”, so I pointed out the positives. You seem strangely perplexed that I chose to write positively about a young Everton player . GOT that.

No, you brought Welch up for discussion with your post. Eggs gave his opinion, I gave mine to Eggs, that is all. You then got butt hurt we don’t think he’s impressed us all that much asking me for a list of names of players I think are better like I don’t watch youth football.

Don’t take things so personally when on, as you mentioned, a forum for different opinions.

Good grief , seriously are you losing it? Go back and read the posts again . You seem to be getting uptight over nothing.

….my view is based on my high expectation, I thought he was outstanding in a those back to the wall performances in last seasons FA Youth Cup (Man City, Chelsea?). The little Sheff Utd striker ran Welch and his partner ragged in that recent game, I was looking for them to talk and work in partnership but there was no leadership.

Then I see a Rolls Royce acceleration and outstanding block in the 2nd half and get my hopes up again. I wouldn’t in the least write him off, I just expected him to be outstanding this season but he hasn’t been. Fingers crossed he’s what I hoped he’d be at one stage.

Dont forget as been already said that 8th placed Everton u23s play Home to 10th placed Leicester who are 2 points behind Everton but have 2 games in hand, tonight at 7pm Live on YouTube

While Tomorrow's Everton u18s game v Derby has been moved to a week Tuesday with a 1pm KO, But before that Everton play away to Man Utd in The Youth Cup Wednesday at 7pm and that Game Is Live on MUFC

Yes , you said that previously in your response to me, I had no problem with that.

Just had a look at all the Premier League centre backs, not a single one has started this season under the age of 21. And there are only 3 21 year olds (Salissu, Kabak & Guehi (Forfana would make it 4!
18 for a centre back is no age at all!

The player that’s interested me for some time is Trevoh Chalobah , making his break through at Chelsea this season at 22 after various loan spells. It was anEngland u18/19 game where he played alongside our Morgan Feeney where he first caught my eye. He was , bigger, stronger , faster , more composed than Feeney. Same England team at 18 but different abilities and future paths and even with his ability it’s taken another 3/4 years to break through at Chelsea , though arguably it may have been sooner at another club.
