Unsworth certainly polarises opinions. I have a mixture of positive/ negative thoughts on last night. Firstly it was a great result achieved by using about four different combinations, 3 at the back , a four at the back, 3 in midfield with 1 striker , 4 in midfield with 2 strikers. It takes good coaching to get youngsters to adapt to the discipline needed to do this. Oumar was given a run out , no more , no less I doubt it was a deliberate ploy to win the game. I don’t particularly like Charsley playing, but can see the logic of playing an experienced U23s player in the context of balancing out the less experienced Onyango and John. Those two were very positive selections.
I would have liked to see John getting more game time, may have been injured of course , but bringing on the defensive mid Denny so soon was a negative for me. Bringing on Simms was a positive, and the tiring Onyango needed to be subbed but then bringing on the defender Joe Anderson was a negative.
I would have loved Dobbin to have got a run out ( instead of Anderson) , his pace would have troubled them and he would have got a lot out of playing competitively alongside Oumar . A front three of Oumar, Dobbin and Simms would have been a very positive statement that we wanted to win the game not just hold what we’ve got. We still would have had three defensive mids to protect the defence.
It’s sad and frustrating that only at u18 level do our teams play without inhibition and can comeback and win a game they are losing , so the frustration is that we missed an opportunity to start getting that winning mindset into our U23s. But overall a good result and more positives than negatives.
