Not wanting to start this season's thread off on a downer, but I am getting the feeling that Lewis Hamilton isn't going to be returning. Personally after the way they f£6$ed him over last season I wouldn't blame him, and it would take a lot of changes at the FIA regarding race direction in order for him to change his mind.

But at least there should be some boss looking new cars...

He won't turn down $30 million just to make a point imo, fully expect him to be on the grid. Part of me hopes he does retire as I think it would be very interesting to see who gets his seat, the other part of me realises that Verstappen dominance is a given if Hamilton doesnt exist and the cars remain similarly competitive as last season

Don't think money is an issue with him tbh. He's already worth more than he could ever spend and has everything he could ever want. What does a few more numbers on a bank statement mean when you're that wealthy already. The FIA dry bummed him live in front of millions of people.
That's gonna take some coming back from.

i wouldnt not be surprised if he didn't return they really did him wrong at the end of season and i was rooting for max... but the way he won was just wrong i didn't even celebrate it meh.

Id agree if I thought rich people stoppped caring about money once they got rich but this seems to rarely be the case.

I think he will come back for 2 more seasons. If his car looks like it will take him to 8 or 9 titles.
The problem with going now. Verstappen could easily reel off the next 3-4 titles, without him in the field.
I would have thought. If he had a decent car, he will want to protect his legacy as the most successful driver. Go now, and Verstappen is young enough to have a good sniff at taking that crown.

I can only see Hamilton returning this season if he's extremely confident that he'd win another title. Even with a salary of $30m I think he'd feel like he was wasting his time if he didn't finish the season with an 8th championship win.
I hope he comes back and absolutely smashes it then retires at the end of the season.

I think he'll be back.

He definitely feels wronged by Massi and the FIA and I reckon his motivation is just a big "F U" to them.

I was massively annoyed at the time, it was clearly rigged. Now I have calmed down Verstappen is a worthy Champion. (Just as Hamilton would have been)

An incredible season.

While I am leaning more towards him being on the grid than not, the fact that the inquiry started less than a fortnight ago does worry me.

Masi needs to go and there must be clear guidelines that show that the rules will be abided by, let alone how they're implemented.

The problem for the FIA is that if they sack Masi, they are basically admitting they he got it wrong in Abu Dhabi and therefore delegitimising Verstappen's world championship. That's why it's not just a question of Masi's competence, it is a hugely political issue. The last thing that Liberty and FIA want is to basically have a illigimate champion in the eyes of many.

The flip side to this would be that any failure to act would be a question of their incompetence because most recognise that it was an utter farce.

If the teams can't trust the owners to maintain the integrity of the sport, in the long run it'll do that a lot harm. Many already acknowledge it wasn't right.
