2020/21 Fabian Delph

I'd honestly just dump him in with the youths and tell him he's not in the picture and will never play for the club again. He'll either sit and take his wages, as he's doing anyway, or his ego will make him find another club. And he has a big ego.

Brands really shown himself up signing the likes of Delph and Iwobi. Two utterly bizarre and hugely expensive signings in terms of fee/wages - 30m in fees and easily over 150k a week on the pair of them.

Give him away for free.
Not possible unfortunately thanks to Brands' wise decision to contract him on a huge wage until June 2022. No club in the world will want him even on half the wage we pay - who wants a constantly injured player on huge wages, apart from us?

I was always trying to be balanced or generous in my opinion about Brands on these two signings:
- Maybe Delph was supposed to be the amazing captain and leader that we needed - vocal, experienced, good communicator
- Maybe Iwobi would finally find the place and position that would finally unlock his amazing potential

But then, I thought the strategy was to nurture young talent and build a squad together, and Delph is no Gareth Barry, and we should have found out more about his current fitness and his character
We already had a project with Walcott to develop a player with loads of potential!

Definitely could have found younger, unproven versions of Delph & Iwobi. And I hope we're not being too traditional in our captaincy. It's ok to have a younger captain to build the team around, if we can't find a giant - Rooney could have been but that all went pear shaped and he clearly wasn't in the right frame of mind.

I was always trying to be balanced about these two signings = trying to make Delph like a senior Neville-Barry-Jagielka type figure in the dressing room that we've had in the past, and Iwobi, maybe they thought that we would finally unlock his potential - just like we were going to with 28 year old Walcott !

But then, I thought the whole strategy was focusing on young talent and grooming them - ?!

I think you were spot on with your Delph Barry comparison I think that was the plan. Unfortunately he is only half the man, half the player and not even half as physically fit.
