Thanks for this - just had a quick trawl through the list and it's interesting to see how few films from the 70's/80's make it into, certainly, the Top 50.

Aside from The Godfather, Apocalypse Now, One flew over the Cuckoo's Nest, Back to the Future....all classics of their own genre - there seems to have been a dearth of watchable or memorable movies. Perhaps this was because of the lack of funding as the halcyon days of the cinema dipped considerably for a couple of decades and with the advent of home videos the profitability of big budget films was not the same for the studios. I don't know but it seems that things didn't start picking up again until the development of CGI and surround sound which gave cinema goers a whole new perspective and experience,?

Like I said, the Top 50

But I agree now that you've drawn these to my attention there were, indeed, some excellent films during the 70's/80's. I just couldn't remember most. I would say that I could, indeed, still enjoy about 75% of those mentioned and I'll use your list as an aide memoire 👍

Theres a couple of great books, Easy Riders to Raging Bulls is one, on what happened to the Industry during that time.. but it’s probably more to do with the voting being more skewed to modern films.

I'd say it's more because of the voting demographic of the IMDB database rather than a lull during the 70/80s and subsequent picking up with surround sound. There's far too much tribalism among IMDB users and insane voting based on films being from the wrong comic book publisher or being too woke.

And being a system based on internet voting there is always going to be a recency bias away from older films unless they're established 'classics' which in themselves often benefit from overly generous voting due to their status.
