Final game at Goodison - confirmed Sunday 18 May, 12PM

Yeah, you are massively exaggerating how much money it would bring in for a one off game.

We’re not getting sponsorship deals off Paul McCartney performing a few songs at the end of the match.

It will generate hits and clicks on social media, probably expose us to a wider audience for one night but that’s about it.

None of this should be in consideration for the final game at Goodison any way. Save it for the new stadium as that’s where the money is.
Oh bless your naive little Luddite socks.

He used to go with his Uncles who were all blues. Its he closest anybody ever got to an admission of where his support lies. John never liked football.
Do you have a link/source or the like to that because that's the first I've ever heard it said he'd attended a game outside the 68 Cup final ?

You're probably right, though I don't see why we want their attention, we're not Kopites. Saying goodbye to Goodison is for us fans, and Sky / TNT / The Prem can get f***** if they think they're going to take ownership of it.
Can just hear their patter now:

"Pickford, at the Gwladys street end clears. Clears it from the exact same spot he murdered Van Dijk in 2020. And the ball is now with 15-year old Saints academy product Bradley Twiffington-Noblett, who is already on a hat-trick tonight as the Saints look to avoid Derby's record low tally. Intercepted by Tarkowski. Lucky not to be doing time in Walton after that tackle across the park last month, across the park, of course, is where the party will be in six days when Liverpool lift the trophy. Worthy champions, possibly the greatest ever. Slot already one of the greatest Prem managers ever. Jamie?"
"NO DOUBT ABAARRRRR IT!!! (Hawk tuah!)"

In a story about the Goodison bugler

Further corroboration of the existence of a supporter (or supporters) bringing a touch of brass to Goodison comes from Sir Paul McCartney. When recalling his childhood for the mid-1990s Anthology project he stated:

‘I went occasionally to watch football. My family team was Everton, and I went to Goodison Park a couple of times with my uncles Harry and Ron…I remember being at one game and a guy had a trumpet and was commentating on the game musically. Someone would have a shot at goal which would go way, way over the top and he’d play: “Over the mountains, over the sea.” Very skilful.’

Maybe I'm an idiot who just doesn't get modern football, but this whole potential circus with Mccarthy singing and whatever just isn't for me. The night should be about Goodison Park and us, the fans who love it. This place means the world to me. it's where my Grandad first took me at four years old. It's the place where my Dad and Grandad (neither of whom are around anymore) took me week in and week out and where me and my Dad truly bonded. Its the place that I've got my final happy memory of my beloved Grandad. It's the place where me and my bro could bond even when we couldn't stand each other. Its the place that me and my mum would walk my other bro to in his wheelchair whenever he got distressed and it always calmed him down. Its the place I took my Mrs on our third date and I knew she was the girl for me because she referred to the blues as "us" and "we". I've got so many amazing memories of this place and while it'll be nice for the higher-ups and tv people to have a celebrity signing a song it'll mean absolutely nothing to me.

I think this discussion around the final game and Paul McCartney highlights how difficult a position the club is in with stuff like this. Don't get me wrong, over the years they have made some bloody stupid calls on marketing and publicity (Magnificent 7th dvd and NZ Haka dance for the black away kit spring to mind!). But with this feels like they are damned if they do, damned if they don't.

Obviously its only a rumour anyway, but lets just pretend for a minute its a definite thing. I'm not a particular Beatles or Paul McCartney fanatic, far from it. But he is just about the biggest name still alive in music, with some kind of link to the club, and obviously a huge link to the city. And without being a dedicated fan I do recognise he has a huge back catalogue of very catchy, very "sing a longable" songs.

The alternatives would be either to just pack up and go home after the final whistle, which I am sure the club would get stick over. Or try and do something more twee and personal. But what would that be? My personal memories of Goodison are not necessarily the same as other peoples, so what could you possibly do that would engage 40k people? Chances are you would entertain a portion of the crowd but bore the majority rigid.

Its probably nonsense anyway, but if the club did pull it off it would be just about as big a thing as could be reasonably expected and for me, a very fitting final moment. We will probably end up with Billy Maher and that god awful rendition of GOT

He has been quoted a few times,

here on ToffeeWeb, that he went to goodison with his uncles Harry and Ron and they were always nice memories for him

and in 2013 in the Echo (quoting an article in the Observer) saying that Everton are his families team, his dad supported them and if it came down to it, in a derby he supports Everton.

The licence application said extended for incidental music which would rule out a post match live performance.

Given the required set up for someone like McCartney, I would imagine any performance would pre-game. Easy enough to set up a stage in the centre circle. Whacks out out 3 songs before kick off similar to the CL final?

Mate, I know exactly how it works.

I think you’re the naive one if you believe Paul McCartney brings in anywhere near the sponsorship needed to help the team.

You’re talking tens of millions here.
No I think you're just misunderstanding the entire point I was making to be honest. Obviously Paul McCartney playing at Goodison and the last game being on Sky wouldn't individually create loads of money, like in terms of people just throwing money at us on the day. I didn't think that needed spelling out. The point I was making was that the more you're in the news and in people's consciousness and associated with big things, the more appealing you are to investors, sponsors, and new fans.

Think all of us will have different views and that is fair because is everyone right to feel whatever they do about the last game. Becuase of the memories for me getting mccartbey to sing would be great not just that but having a whole celebration getting past players on the pitch ect. Have memories of games on the screen ect. Is no real right answer just hope you and others and me can just all enjoy the moment

This is what it boils down to for me. It's all very well people saying 'it's about Everton and the memories' etc, but that's not a quantifiable thing, what Goodison means to us all as individuals is totally different, so you're then basically saying let's just play the game and let everyone commemorate it in their own way. Maybe that's what some people want, almost like a family only funeral type thing. I thing it would be very sad for Goodison to go down with that sort of a whimper personally, but like I say, we're all different.

They should just turn the screens off like you do with the tele when you go to bed, then the lights, one stand at a time, leave one light on longer than the others for a bit of a poignant moment, when it goes out, go home and last one out shut the door.
Tomorrow's a new beginning.

Yeah, that's the nub of my point really. There isn't a right or wrong thing to do, because everyone is different. One persons idea of a fantastic fitting tribute would be another persons idea of something morbid/boring/too flash/too understated.......delete as appropriate! Clearly the club will be doing something "special" before or after the game, possibly both. It needs to be something that has a baseline entertainment value for everyone.

Paul McCartney isn't the only answer to that particular conundrum btw, I am sure there are no end of good ideas and possibilities. But having one of the worlds most legendary musicians playing some of the worlds most famous songs wouldn't be a bad thing, I'm sure he could "Everton" it all up a bit anyway, sling a scarf round his neck and pick a couple of songs that fit the occasion or change a lyric here or there.
