Me and the Mrs will be travelling round Europe next year and she fancies a side trip to New York. Having a look on a couple of websites, it seems there is no easy way to get a decent price. For example, If I choose London to NY, it is $850 direct, but $450 if I take the flight via Lisbon. But if I try Lisbon to NY, it is $850 direct but $450 if I go via London 🤷‍♂️

What are the best websites to get a decent deal for direct flights? Or should I wait until I am in the country I want to fly from and try to book it from there?

I honestly have no idea why it works like that.

Precovid if I was travelling to the US it was significantly cheaper to book (Maldives - Dubai- Any US Hub) rather than (Dubai - US) direct, even when you add in the Dubai - Maldives return to bookend the trip.

In your particular case, trust me: take in Lisbon, do a couple of days there. It's a wonderful city.

Yeah, we don't really have that issue in Australia as we don't really have connecting flights, but I do remember going to Brazil in 2014, direct flight from Dubai to Rio was $5k, but Jo'burg-Dubai-Rio was $1.1k

I'm thinking it may be better to wait and book the flight when we are in one of the less affluent countries, airfares may reflect the cost of living?

We will defo be doing at least a week in Lisbon 👍

Supply and demand, same way flights with reasonable times are more than those early in the morning, there's no way of getting cheap deals really... As mentioned skyscanner is an aggregator for all flights

Your best bet might be to go direct to an airline ask for a return ticket to NY with changes at all the locations you wanted to stop at. Obvs need to be open flights so you can schedule from each location…..

Yeah, I get that. But surely doesn't explain why flight from London is cheaper if we go via Lisbon, and flight from Lisbon is cheaper via Lodon. They are basically paying me $400 to do an extra flight 🤷‍♂️

Noticed that myself recently when looking at flights from Dublin to Vegas. Could go as cheap as £550 via London but to go direct from London was over £1k.
