The fares on TAP via Lisbon are cheap because TAP is purportedly in financial trouble. We flew the other way last year from Washington to Lisbon to London for half the price of most other airlines and had 5 days stopover in Lisbon (drove to Faro for a few days) to boot.
Just booked return tickets to Dublin from DC for $500 (direct) on Aer Lingus -cheap because we are flexible on flight dates and times.
Generally if you are prepared to take a one stop flight via Portugal or Iceland you are going to see heavily discounted fares. If you use Kayak.com or the like you can compare flight days for a cheaper flight if you are flexible. They are also a deal aggregator so you usually wont be bettered for price. Once you see a deal you like with someone like that I always go check the airlines site as sometimes its a few dollars cheaper as you avoid the aggregator fee.
I would steer clear of Expedia btw - they are a mess post sale if you have any issues.

When you are searching, make sure you do it in incognito (porn) mode. Prices tend to go up if you search the same site multiple times.

If you have a vpn, it might be worth changing your location to that of your destination and see if that comes up cheaper.
