Football phrases you hate...

Pearl Drop Rodgers had me guessing when he first uttered in interview at the RS.. "as a side, they're very good in the transition". I was eventually informed that this meant doing what the aim of a football team is ie, moving the ball forward from one end of the pitch to the other.

The club did have their own in house psychiatrist at that time though I believe...on secondment from their Supporters Club in Lower Breck.

“This could be England’s tournament”

After getting into an international tournament by winning every game in a group consisting of San Marino, Moldova, Faroe Islands U12’s and Pontypandy FC

"Ex/former Liverpool " even though a player has had a number of clubs, John Barnes is the perfect example, rose to fame at Watford, especially with that goal v Brazil in 83 or his goal of the season in 84 for Watford at Birmingham, yet media only recognise or portray his time at RS.

They all have developed since we became an americanised TV show instead of a football match.
When was it first used?
In the 1930s,the Austrian national team known as the wunderteam were dazzling fans and opposition teams with their revolutionary style of play. Leading the team was the withdrawn center forward Matthias Sindelar. Sindelar was one of the first strikers who dropped deep to create havoc among defences. Then there was the great Hungarian team of the 50s with Nandor Hidegkuti as the deep lying forward. But in modern football, the earliest example one can think of is,Francesco Totti for Roma under Luciano Spaletti in 2006/07.

"We all need to put our hands up and be counted"

Utterly ridiculous metaphor, often spouted by managers/players on a poor show of form. You're going to have to raise more than just a hand to win the approval of paying fans I'm afraid....and to be counted??? Literally, just making up the numbers.
