Forgotten Great Footballers

Stoichkov too. The Balkan ballers of my youth.

Both Romania and Bulgaria had some boss players on display at the 94 world cup. Letchkov, Dumitrescu, the mad goalie with the bad wig.
Taking the thread a few days back, but - Borislav Mihailov? He's known as "the wig" around our parts, used to be the head of the FA and the head of the "party now, party also a bit later, never stop drinking" movement. He's had to be removed from several press conferences and one official stadium visit due to being utterly pissed, as well as his amazing post-match press conferences where he doesn't even know what he's being asked (we've been utterly HORRID for about 20 years).

Also the nonsense at the game against England here in Bulgaria was pretty much directed at his tenure - his resignation was requested officially before that and we basically committed sepuku by choice - getting banned so he can get removed. But then he had his second in command basically being "interim" for 2 years as no one was voted in (Berbatov failed, the useless knobhead), so who did we get back in? Mihailov.

He did have some more banter though - like hiring a Serbian ex-mediocre footballer to be the national team head coach, who spent his first few days in the local craphole clubs drinking (you'll know the sleezy chalga clubs we have around here at least lol ).

Mihailov then quit, his Serbian drinking buddy (who was an atrocious manager playing random favourites of Mihailov's, surprisingly) got fired and Berbatov failed again and we got an actual racist with potential alcohol problems - ex Levski footballer Georgi Ivanov - Gonzo.

We're fully in the banter years here, have been for a long, long time.

A bit of trivia is that Mihailov randomly played for Reading, 95-97 or something like that.

Anyway, we have indeed had some hidden gems -

Nikolay "The Kaiser" Todorov was famous for goals like this, for example, and Rangers fans still know Levski for this heartbreak and the match(es) being amazing. Todorov's son now actually lives in Scotland himself and has played for several teams in the lower leagues.

First goal in that game was by Sirakov - fantastic player, currently a bit of a knob and de-facto owner/majority shareholder of Levski Sofia after some more banter with "being owned by an actively hunted by Interpol mafia person" and then by a corrupt betting company.

We also had Trifon Ivanov in USA '94, what a defender. May he rest in peace.

Sounds awesome. We've got Southgate. Gazzain charge would be so much more entertaining.

The Bulgarian midfield from '94 was class ... Kostadinov, Lechkov, Balakov. Plus Stoichkov up top. What a tournament that was.

The only foreign players I remember coming to England in the 70s and being a success were Ardiles and Villa at Spurs and Muhren and Thyssen at Ipswich.

Tanrantini didn't last long at Birmingham. Then you had Alex Sabella at Sheffield Utd. Apparently they were on the verge of buying Maradona.

I deperately wanted Everton to sign Mario Kempes. The Killer. What a player.
