Transfer Rumour Gabriel (Lille)

Oh look at me

Im so cool as I dont care what business we do in the market.

I don't care if the club never does sweet all again

I'll keep paying my season ticket and clap clap clapping cuz im so cool

Thats how the usual rubbish looks when you see the same suspects moaning at other fans for moaning mate.

The funny thing is im not even that arsed about the transfer window - im just responding to someone who states that if we miss out on Gabriel its not the clubs fault when in this instance it clearly is...

But you criticise Brands for over-paying.

Then you also criticise him for not over-paying and wanting to negotiate a deal.

All of us want us to do good business mate, but Brands / the club can't win when they have people criticising them for every decision they make.

I'd be very surprised if United were in for Gabriel. It has a similar feeling to the Mina deal at this point. I think we were the only club ever in for Mina but new 'leaks' were always coming out about United and other clubs and it turned out it was probably all just a front from Barca to get us to overpay. I like Mina but we really did overpay for him, he cost nearly £30m despite Barca getting him for less than £10m I think only 6 months before. Obviously he had a good World Cup but not enough to triple his value.

We obviously can't fall into the same trap with Gabriel. We need to stick to our value of him despite the incredibly short time-frame we have on the start of next season. I don't think we'll get drawn in to an agent's game this time around as we aren't desperate for another centre back.
Being reported everywhere that his agent met with woodward. As you say if they don't like our price we should move on

lol lol Says the man who's made at least 50 posts in this thread alone.

I've an interest in it - because it determines if we are to be in the fight for europe next season or a relegation battle.

Under Ancelotti this current squad are not good enough to play his way and thats the bottom line.

I haven't a problem with us missing out on targets as its one of them - we look to have missed out on Hojbjerg to spurs and it is what it is.

My issue with this particular transfer is that he is one of our main targets and to mess Lille about and not get it done and dusted months ago to try save a few quid is a very risky gamble imo.

Dont get me wrong if he signs then the gamble paid off - but after the shambles of last summer I didn't want the club gambling I wanted the club being efficient and getting in the main targets and not leave it to deadline day chasing Iwobi and Smalling.

It also comes down to Brands having too much power at the club - he never should have been appointed to the board as it gives him no one to answer to - imagine had we appointed Marco Silva or any manager to the board - who do they answer to if we are in the relegation spots?

The DOF and Manager should be accountable to the board.

But if he signs for big money and then flops, you will be the first to give Brands loads of abuse for overspending. So he can't win

I don't understand why so many people object to the Director of Football being on the Board of Directors...

Brands has done far from a stellar job, but why is it such a bad thing that our most senior first team staff member sits with our executives and is able to brief them with actual dialogue? If anything, it makes him even more accountable because he has to face the music every time there's a Board meeting about why we are so crap...

Well thats the role as DOF - if you sign players who are good you are applauded - if you sign players that are crap you take the criticism.

There was nothing stopping Brands from getting the deal done months ago - he gambled and he has to take the flack if the gamble doesn't pay off - the same way a manager takes the flack if they make a daft sub at 2-0 up and you lose the game 3-2.

Ultimately football is a game of fine margins - which is why I expected Brands to get the main targets lined up and be ruthless in getting them in this window.

Obviously if the top sides swan in and nab them then its one of them but taking unnecessary risks/gambles does him no favours when we've just been bamboozled 3-1 at home by relegated Bournemouth.

it’s not like we went in a global pandemic or anything.....oh wait

We're going to lose out on him because way better teams are sniffing around not because of money.
We could have avoided that situation by wrapping the deal up quicker. Not mess around by trying to renegotiate.

You’re trying to argue to entirely separate points to protect our clown DoF for yet another failure.

Not every player that signs is a hit, you only have to look at Utd for that with some mega money spent over the years on massive flops.

problem with us at the moment is we dont have a good enough squad to have the flop in our squad, with UTD they had a mega team and if the player didn’t work out they were moved on quickly. We dont have the squad so were expecting every player to come in and have an instant impact
