Gerard Deulofeu - Once a Blue, always a Blue

I know I've been Fogeyish about most of these signings so far, but I would be happy to see this lad sign

I just think Martinez has his excuse not to play Barkley now, and I think it's imperitative for the future of the club that he gets starts this season and not to start the lad on loan in his place

Just my stance, obviously

I rate Barkley a lot higher than most

They don't play the same position. If anything this signals Pienaar is going to play a lot less. I still think Barkley will get a lot more time this year. He'll probably take minutes from Osman.

I really don't know why people can't see a good signing as a good signing. It's constantly got to mean its an obstruction to another player or the end of another's time at EFC. Why can't both be in and around the team? I'd seriously expect this lad and Barkley to get about 30 odd games between them this year. That's a fair bit of game time.

....it will be a challenge adapting to the Premiership but he looks a bit tasty this lad. Hope this thread doesn't turn into another Barklay discussion. I remain a doubter and can fully understand why he's not been getting playing time, but this young chap from Barca looks on a different planet.

I don't wish to get ahead of myself (because we all know Fellaini and/or Baines will probably leave), but:

I think this is a fair old coup myself. I think Pienaar needs somebody to push him hard for a place, because there where times we could and should have benched him. Barkley, as you say, is another discussion entirely and they aren't in direct competition. I do hope that Martinez brings through a couple of our youngsters on the edge of first team action as well as loaning in other people's though.

No idea how good or otherwise Deulofeu is, but if he's half as good as people suggest then that is a very good side.

Except I honestly believe we'll have the real Jelavic back this season and Kone will have a task to get a look in. I wouldn't be surprised if Kone plays inside right with Deulofeu as an impact sub, or we play a 4-4-2 perhaps with Pienaar wide left, Mirallas right.

Still, suddenly we have options eh!?

Swap Gibson and Felli around and then that squad is looking very very good. And still maybe more additions!

Kone Jelavic
Pienaar/Deulofeu Barkley Gibson Mirallas
Baines Distin/Duffy Jagielka Coleman
Howard/Robles.

Nice.

Put Ged on the left and Kev on the right, and that could be it. I'd rather see Barkley in Pienaar's slot, but that's me. Stevie may flourish in a more central role though so you may be right.

I don't know that I'd pencil in Deulofeu as a starter yet, but that seems to be the formation we're heading towards. Even if Fellaini stays, we need cover for his and/or Gibson's spots.

Let's say this is the formation and we believe that Deulofeu won't necessarily start from the beginning, I think we'd see Pienaar in one of those foward roles and Osman in Pienaar's spot.
