Gerard Deulofeu has rejected the opportunity to remain at Barcelona and the offer of superior personal terms at rival clubs and is set to join Everton in an attempt to kick-start his career under Roberto Martínez.
In a signal of Everton’s willingness to back Martínez’s vision despite a disappointing campaign last season, the Goodison Park hierarchy has sanctioned a £5 million deal for Deulofeu.
The proposed move represents a risk for both parties, with Deulofeu ready to stake his future on Martínez’s ability to get the best out of him and Everton backing the manager to create the conditions for the winger to flourish.
Such is their mutual belief in one another that Deulofeu has turned down better offers from clubs in England and abroad to return to Everton, with whom he spent the 2013-14 season on loan.
The move has led to disappointment at Barcelona, who had been planning to send the Spain player on loan for a third successive season, and prompted a debate about whether they should have done more to keep him.
Toni Freixa, a candidate in Barcelona’s presidential elections, believes the imminent departure of Deulofeu is symbolic of the club’s “failure” to maximise the talent they produce.
“The model of signing players for €180 million every summer is one Barcelona can’t afford,” Freixa told
AS, the Spanish newspaper. “A talented player in Deulofeu is about to move to Everton and that confirms the failure of the current model.”
Barcelona have struck an agreement with Everton which gives them a buy-back option in return for a fee that is below the 21-year-old’s market value.
In his previous stint at Everton, Deulofeu scored four goals in 29 appearances but his impact lessened as the season wore on after injury. That, though, has not dampened Martínez’s belief that Deulofeu has the talent to become a key player for Everton, for whom Phil Jagielka, the defender, has signed a one-year contract extension, and he will now be given the chance to prove himself in the Barclays Premier League having failed to do so in La Liga
