For the daily mail that was a fantastic read!http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-3275660/Gerard-Deulofeu-enjoying-life-world-away-Barcelona-wants-Roberto-Martinez-proud-Everton.html?ITO=1490&ns_mchannel=rss&ns_campaign=1490&utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=twitter&utm_campaign=Feed:+srn/mail+(Sport+|+Mail+Online)
'I was 10 years at Barca and it's another world,' he says. 'We had 65 per cent of possession most weeks. We always had the ball to the point where often it wasn't necessary for me to defend. Then you leave the club and play somewhere else and you realise that you have to defend. And it is not easy at first. But I'm learning and I'm happy with the way my defensive game and my positioning is improving.'
There is an indication of just how Martinez is getting through to him when he says: 'I know I need to be in the right position when we are defending, if I'm not, I won't be in the team.
Barca still have the option to take Deulofeu back at the end of the season for £6.6million, or at the end of the 2015-16 campaign for £8.8m, but there is a sense that the ship may have already sailed. There is also a comforting realisation that it isn't the end of the world if it has.
'I was never going to cry about it. I didn't want to be on the bench. I wanted to play. I want to have a career. Not every young player is going to succeed at Barcelona. Hector Bellerín left and is now playing for Arsenal. There is life beyond Barca,' Deulofeu says.
Those two will face each other in Everton's next away game at the Emirates. This week he will be up against former Spain Under 21 team-mates David de Gea and Juan Mata. He still wants to make the same journey to Spain's senior team and believes he is in the right place to make that transition.'I think I'm a good fit for English football. It's another style. It's back and forth, end to end for 90 minutes,' he says.
Friends and family have been to games and told him of the murmur of expectation whenever he gets the ball. 'The fans are more passionate, far more involved. I love it. I feel at home here.' Martinez, the man who has put so much faith in him, will be pleased to hear that.
Everton's manager has been linked with the England job and the Barcelona role in the past. Helping a former La Masia star pupil make the grade would do his reputation in Spain no harm. Can Deulofeu see Martinez on the bench at the Camp Nou in the future? His response suggests there is more chance of him succeeding Roy Hodgson than Luis Enrique. 'The thing is Roberto really loves England,' he says, blowing out his cheeks and letting out a 'Woah!' for emphasis.
'He's been here for 20 years. I don't know what he would do if a big Spanish club was interested; you would have to ask him. Perhaps he would say yes, but his life is England. He's an Englishman! He speaks better English than all the native speakers!'
"We’re young, growing together. Players like John Stones, Lukaku, Barkley, McCarthy – good players, competitive players, young players backed by experience with Phil Jagielka, Gareth Barry, Leighton Baines, Tim Howard. Europe is the objective, for now.” And then? “Roberto doesn’t talk to me about [the future] but he doesn’t need to because I see it.”
Think I read once that he skinned him, then turned and offered to sign his jersey."During one youth game, Deulofeu told opponents who had spent the match brutally kicking him in vain that he would sign autographs afterwards if they liked."
i love him.
