Was always going to happen, as the pundits keep on quipping.
The auld Prussian enemy will provide a stiffer test of anything thrown at England so far, with no disrespect to the USA. And will provide plenty of Sunday rage and anxiety up and down ze country.
Plenty of history with this one, Germany provided the language that I'm typing now before taking a defeat (with respect to the USA) after two legs in World War. Wrote in the style of The Mirror. 1966, 1990, 1996, 5-1 in Munchen and a defeat in the last game at Wembley. So about even then, until Sunday.
England will be feeling a wee bit better about themselves after finally getting a win and more importantly showing some cohesive play, England actually looked dangerous at times. The system worked and the introduction of Milner and Defoe paid almost instant dividends with the link up to the goal that got them through. England should have had a couple more on the chances created but despite the jive being talked on various forae and media places, England did not produce a performance to put any fear into anyone left in the competition, least not Germany.
Germany have had a steady start to the contest, dispatching of Australia with some gusto, getting beat to Serbia and then bouncing back to get a result against Ghana qualifying them as top of a potentially tricky group. Up front then have the perennial togger tournament slotters in Klose and Podolski, a tight defence and a bit of jazz on the wing with the Turkish one pretending to be German that we were linked buying, as if. Potentially this year's Arshavin that one. Saying that, Germany from what they've shown so far won't be scaring England stiff either.
You can't see England changing their starting line up from the Slovenia game, and hope to continue the improvement. Carragher will be available after suspension but it will be unlikely that he will come back in to replace Upson, who wasn't anything special against Slovenia (save from an outstanding block at the end) but you'd think is a better option that watching Carragher getting stripped for pace while pulling a face akin to that of a man who just found out that his wife has been getting texts from John Terry. Defoe looked more of a threat up front rather than the micro necked Heskey, although I thought Rooney done a decent impression of Heskey with some hard work but little end product. I'm not sure if he's unfit or just needs a goal for confidence, probably a little from pot a and some from pot b, but he's not looking like the Wayne Rooney who took the piss out of most of the Premiership last season.
So, get the sprouts on early so you're not getting shouted down for your dinner mid way through the first half. Speaking of which, what time do you have Sunday dinner in your house? There's some disparity with this amongst my mates, one has his as early at 1pm and another as late as 7pm. I'm about 3pm which I thought was normal.
Get through this and another much loved country of England probably awaits, and a Maradona media revenge campaign like you've never seen. If you want to win it you got to prepared to beat them all, they say. Penalties, nailed.
