Random diy question here.

Toilet seat been broken since we moved in on the upstairs one. It broke away not too long ago and trying to change it now.

Problem I have is its not coming off. It's a big bolt with a plastic nut with wings if that makes sense. I have for it so far down but it won't turn any more. Well it's turning but not going down anymore and have been turning it for at least 25 minutes.

Any advice here or do I have to just cut the thing off?

Some seats are sort of anchored to stop them slipping. If the nut is just turning like you said it is, chances are the Long Weight is jammed, so you will need to ask for one of them as well.

B & Q will have Long Weights in stock, but dont usually display them cos they are pretty specialised, so make sure you ask.

Cut it off. The bolts are normally separate from the seat so are easily replaced. Look on eBay Amazon etc and you can get replacements for pennies. Go for nylon bots and you won't have the same problem.

Of, to save even more money. Get a sharp craft knife and cut the nylon nut off. The the thread on the nut is stripped and you can by nylon nut or nylon wingnut from any hardware store.

a pair of strong grips then an axe saw to cut the rusted thread on the bolts which will be cheap chinese steel does not matter if you shear the plastic wing nuts just use a junior axe saw with a sharp blade;)
on your new seat got to a good plumbers merchant and by decent threaded bar cut to size and put the metal wing nuts on finger tight preserve them with WD 40 so it stops rusting up for future removal;)

Further on this Ash, i had a similar problem and what roydo said is correct but make sure you ask them for a tin of striped paint to put over it when you're done, it stops the weight from rusting in future.
