Goats squad analysis thread 2022/23

That squad.. what a mess.

We badly need some more deadwood out, Gomes, Davies, Gbamin, Rondon and more, and replaced with top young talent.

We literally couldn’t be worse off if we did that.
They can all go, fine by me.m, but getting top young talent is not so easy.

A few times I have tried to form the basis of analysis in my head.

I never get past RB, what can I even say about Patterson? Ive never watched more than an hour of the lad play.

It honestly pains me looking at that squad, theres a few players I like, but even Dom, there are some question marks about his fitness, who replaces him? Rondon? So yeah, no analysis this window, it hurts my heart too much.

The full backs hopefully point to a change in strategy.

This is a big problem for us still, IMO.

Mykolenko improved in the last few games of the season, but he looks like a fish out of water when he gets over the halfway line. Coleman has mistakes in him. Patterson looks like a player who just wants to play in the opposition half.

The deputies at RB and LB - Holgate and Godfrey - are simply not up to playing there in any average PL team.

I said late last season we're going to need to see another FB brought in - one who's adapatble and can play on either flank, and as part of a back three if necessary.

It's frightening the lack of all round quality in the FB position. In recent seasons we had Baines and Digne and Coleman at his peak. They provided a lot of attacking flair and could also do a job back behind the ball, even if it was just to get back and double up and cover and close down space.

People see the numbers we have at FB and think it's elsewhere we need strengthening more, but the FB position is very weak IMO.

That midfield and forward line has relegation written all over it. They’re players who’ve had their day, players who have their day sporadically and players who’ve never had their day at all.

That midfield is shocking, no defensive robustness/bite, no mobility, no creativity, no goals or assists.

The forwards other than DCL are nowhere near good enough to be starting g regularly - Gordon will be if he kicks in again this season and adds end product.

It’s as bad a squad as I can remember for a long time - just can’t see it creating enough chances, scoring enough goals to win games. Doesn’t offer anywhere near enough protection to the back four to withstand pressure and keep clean sheets.

Frank’s been dealt a bum hand here.

I dont see an area without weakness in the whole squad personally.

Mykolenko ain’t great defensively either, certainly not at set-pieces anyway. At present, I don’t see him as a good buy. As for Patterson, he’s looking like yet another massive waste of cash, or someone that might take 2.5 years to just about make the standard at best.

I think Myko is ok myself, not amazing, but a fairly solid LB.

No idea about Patterson cos im still yet to watch him play football.

I haven’t seen much of Patterson either, but when Jonjo Kenny is ahead of you…

My concern is that he couldn’t get a game at Rangers either. I don’t get where the hype has come from. All he’s done is play in a crap Scottish National side.

I can see him going on loan to the Championship, and we will hopefully bring in someone that is capable of performing at Prem level.

He looks like he enjoys playing in a system for Ukraine where they keep possession and play through midfield playmaker.

No, neither do I.

The attack is chronic and needs major surgery.

Midfield lacks any sort of brain in there.

We're ok out wide - not great, but ok.

CB still looks weak - we need another one in with Tarkowski.

FBs look lacking in overall quality.

GK is either superb or a clown.
