God save the Queen...............should it still be our national anthem

This is not a thread for pro and anti royalists more a debate about the musical merits of the national anthem of this disunited Kingdom.

So often anthems stir emotions, words that represent the land of origin bringing pride and passion to its citizens, sadly in my view GSTQ just doesn't do it. This dirge blandly praises one individual, does nothing to represent the country itself and fails to represent its people in any way. The Scots have adopted 'Flower of Scotland' the Welsh 'Bread of heaven' only England and N Ireland really keep GSTQ but why, 90% don't even know the words or that there is more than one verse let alone what those words mean.

I think its about time it was replaced 'Jerusalem' is more passionate piece though now outmoded...........can you suggest a replacement and who should compose it..........

You might be right there, my friend. Just look at the lyrics, they're everything an anthem should be:

They could modify the chorus to 'bring it all back to UK'.

I'm not a big fan of the idea of changing the national anthem myself but if we did I'd be happy with any of the following: Jerusalem, Land of Hope and Glory, Rule Britannia. Orr if the UK does breakup I'd like, They'll always be an England.

On a more serious note, Jerusalem would be better than GSTQ by miles.

Land of Hope and Glory is a bit colonialist but would probably suit the Telegraph readers. Firestarter is a great shout, though.
