God save the Queen...............should it still be our national anthem

Billy Bragg - The Few

On a more serious note, Jerusalem would be better than GSTQ by miles.

Land of Hope and Glory is a bit colonialist but would probably suit the Telegraph readers. Firestarter is a great shout, though.
Actually misread the OP - Jerusalem should be for the England games when they play the National Anthem atm...

Perhaps blasting out a round of Kc and the sunshine gang's walking on sunshine to perk the english up?

Big dramatic anthem of other country

i'm walking on sunshine, woah, it's time to feel good! (everyone dances)

I'm not a big royalist, but normally like tradition,in the case though of a national anthem we definately need something more inspirational,Billy Connolly may have appeared to have been joking but I think he has a point.

This is not a thread for pro and anti royalists more a debate about the musical merits of the national anthem of this disunited Kingdom.

So often anthems stir emotions, words that represent the land of origin bringing pride and passion to its citizens, sadly in my view GSTQ just doesn't do it. This dirge blandly praises one individual, does nothing to represent the country itself and fails to represent its people in any way. The Scots have adopted 'Flower of Scotland' the Welsh 'Bread of heaven' only England and N Ireland really keep GSTQ but why, 90% don't even know the words or that there is more than one verse let alone what those words mean.

I think its about time it was replaced 'Jerusalem' is more passionate piece though now outmoded...........can you suggest a replacement and who should compose it..........
Jerusalem is a Christian poem/hymn though mate. Not everyone in the UK is Christian.

Love the National Anthem, I've been to many England games, & it makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand out, as does Z Cars !!

Written by a lickspittle, way back when the Jacobites put the willies rarr up the fat king. Vomit-inducing, fawning sycophancy on a grandiose scale.

Teams don't play for the monarch (Who takes very little interest in anything other than so-called sports that involve some form of bestiality or other)

They play for the nation, and the common scum. We're the ones supporting them week in, week out. Not them.

The royals are sick to death of hearing it themselves ffs.

'Rule Brittania' or 'There'll always be an England' should be the anthem for English (inter)national sporting events.

Balls to 'Land of hope & glory' and 'Jerusalem' (Which isn't even in England, and is also another dirge anyway)

And that's just about it.

I think you'll find Blake was writing about building a new Jerusalem among those green and pleasant hills interspersed with dark Satanic mills... (unless you are doing a bit of wind-up, in which case, carry on)

Wouldn't want Jerusalem in MY backyard - Not with all the shizzle that goes with it, these days.

Is it really a Christian hymn?

I know they use it in church and IMO would make a splendid anthem but as I understand it, Blake meant it as a satire on the conditions the working poor found themselves living in.......the dark satanic mills reflecting the reality of life for most in England's green and pleasant land.

But certainly a stirring tune.
