I'd say to aim for 5 different protein sources a day, so whey, chicken, tuna, steak and eggs and the reason I say this is because each have different amino acids and it stops food from getting boring.

You may get more protein for the £ in chicken and milk but whey has the highest protein value than any other food.

Don't take it as I'm saying to rely on supplements the only times I would say to consume whey protein is first thing and post workout, always with water for faster digestion (unless its before bed)

Don't get me wrong, I'm not completely against the sports food industry, I just think that a whole lot of people swallow the marketing gumph and buy things they don't need. Like my post earlier, if you have figured out how much protein you need vs consume in your regular diet and there is a deficit then maybe consider them, but I'm not sure many folks have any idea either how much they need or how much their actual diet gives them.

It seems like protein shakes are trendy at the moment amongst blokes desperate to get big. That most of these blokes are only training for vanity purposes rather than a sport makes me sadder.

I see where you're coming from, the power the supplement market have is high and they use the best athletes to promote their brand, to a random 18 year old starting out he's gonna see Jay Cutler advertising muscle tech and think cell tech or something will have him being huge in a few months, I think a lot of us when we were younger believed the hype around supplements but as our knowledge grew we realised that food is actually more important. Bodybuilding sport is only small and for it continue needs all the help it can get. It's an expensive hobby and a very hard one for people to excel in. I think the shows the NABBA do are great and give people that platform to then move on into the IFBB or others but for most it is and always will be a hobby.

What saddens me is the diet fads that pop up every so often and a lot of people jump on the bandwagon. They forget the principles of hard work and dedication and think they can do a fast track 4 week plan, It's nonsense.

'Get beach ready' workouts should be banned. As should all those ab workouts you see in mags and online.
Situps are probably the worst exercise you could prescribe for someone who is out of shape.

All training should really revolve around getting stronger and faster.

All a bit vain innit? Are blokes more obsessed by their looks now than women?

Back on topic, did 90km this morning before work. Lovely morning for it, albeit a bit windy. One more longer ride and then taper next week.

£50 worth of unflavoured whey protein gives you 4,000g of protein.

£50 worth of semi-skimmed milk gives you 4,090g of protein.

or £50 worth of whole Tesco (other brands may apply) chicken gives you around 4,350g of protein.

Just saying like ;)

Except you can get whey supplements for a much lower rate than £50 for 5kg.

MyProtein currently has their Impact Blend whey protein supplement up for £31 for 4.5kg, with a protein balance of 80g per 100g of product. That's 3.6kg of whey protein for £31, or to extrapolate out 5.8kg for £50.

Therefore it's more efficient in terms of protein per pound as well as being much more convenient than eating chicken or drinking a ton of milk. One scoop of protein powder provides 20 grams of protein, you'd have to drink 600ml of milk in one go just to get the equivalent amount.

As for the stuff about people buying supplements to make themselves look better and being vain, i'm not sure what the issue is compared to doing it for sport. The definition of sport is to compete against other people, which is exactly what people tend to be doing when trying to improve the way they look by growing muscle or losing weight. There's nothing sad about wanting to improve the way you feel about yourself when you look in the mirror or change how your peers see you.

Juice Plus is the latest one. £34 a month for capsules that taste like juice.

Good post

People have this idea they are going to get 'bulked up' with some weights!
Olympic lifting is really about moving the weight faster, not about lifting huge weight.

I've been lifting for 5/6 years and I've filled out, but I don't look like the hulk.

Yes, but refer to my previous point - most people don't need extra protein in their diet, they get more than enough as it is. So going overboard on protein loading, be it via a supplement or downing several pints of milk, is largely a waste of time.

It's recommended that you have around 1.5g of protein per kg of body weight. Unless you're a 100kg+ rugby player then I'd be staggered if you can't get all you need from a decent, healthy diet. I mean the meal I had after my ride yesterday had around 50g of protein, 80g of carbs, as well as all the other good stuff you get from vegetables. That's almost my daily amount in one meal!

As for vanity, *shrug*, it's up to folks what they do, they're grown people and all that. Personally speaking, I'd rather be fit and healthy than have a Mens Health physique that is often airbrushed to within an inch of its life. I mean aerobic fitness is generally a pretty good thing for all round health, yet if you do any kind of decent aerobic exercise that's going to hamper your attempts to get big. It won't stop you becoming strong, but you won't gain bulk.

You don't tend to see blokes from the free weights area venturing across to the running machine though :)

I started lifting not far shy of 20 years ago (man I'm an old fart!) as part of swim training. I'm stronger now (and certainly fitter) than I've ever been, but due to cycling 300km a week, I'm a lot less bulky than I was. The cracking tan lines I've generated tend to stop me going to the beach too often though

Smashing weather for a ride this morning. Didn't plan on going too hard, but had a few rabbits to chase on the local climbs and ended up posting PBs all over the show. Seem in super form for the trip to Austria.
