Greatest Free kick for Everton

If Maradona did what Sheedy did in that match, people would have raved.

To be fair, they did for Kevin too. And, to make the goal - or goals - even better, the man in goal was actually a penalty-saving expert, the great Paul Cooper. Even he was powerless against the Sheedy free kick.

It's been a long time since we had that level of consistent genius associated with our club.

Leighton's not been retired THAT long; although it feels like it.

It’s this goal for me too.
Free kick: one corner of the net
Oh, you want me to take it *again*?
Ok: other corner of the net.

Unreal

Sorry about the quality of this recording but the free kick at the end of the clip here is easily my favourite. This was just as Howard Kendall's side was starting to gel. As I recall it was a Friday night and we were in the pub after work (The Rising Sun on Lamb's Conduit Street in London - very few football fans let alone Evertonians amongst the punters). The game was on the telly (an increasing rarity at the time) and I was going round the pub telling everyone to watch as a free kick in that position was as good as a penalty to Sheedy. What happened was, somehow, even better than if he had stuck it straight in ...
