The Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band were in Liverpool and Neil Innes (vocalist on this song) was reading Jean-Paul Sartre's Nausea and thought it was a load of old rubbish: this guy wandering about worrying if a lamppost exists more than he does. That's not a fact, mate...that there is philosophy, for what are we? Matter? Consciousness? Merely this body?

Also, while true that the total amount of mass and energy in the universe is constant (i.e. matter can't be created or destroyed), matter & energy do change their structures quite radically so that the concept of our immortality from that perspective is very relative indeed.
