Groucho's Fact Hunt

The world's first webcam (1991) was devised by researchers at Cambridge University to save them fruitless journeys to the one coffee machine that served several areas.

Using kettlecam they could check to see if enough coffee was in the pot, or whether or not there was a queue.

Stupid this as I can foresee a scenario where they all see the pot is empty, and everybody sits at their desk waiting for everybody else to fill it up.

Other issues might arise where they see somebody helping themselves to the last drop and wandering off without refilling it for the next caffeine addict. I can imagine undignified academic fuming and vitriol on the message boards like the ones we see here when a player suffers a loss of form.

I knew they were popular but...

Over a quarter of all known animal species are beetles

There are 350,000 different species of beetles on Earth described so far, and many more that are still undiscovered. That’s more than 25% of all animals species and about 20% off all living species including plants.

As some noted biologist (J B Haldane) once noted: "The Creator, if He exists, has an inordinate fondness for beetles".

Five heavyweight champions have never lost a fight by stoppage: Gene Tunney, Rocky Marciono, Riddick Bowe, Nicolai Valuev, and Sultan Ibragimov.

Five heavyweight champions retired having beaten every opponent they ever faced at least once [ie if they lost, it was avenged]: Gene Tunney, Rocky Marciano, Riddick Bowe, Ingemar Johansson, Lennox Lewis.
