Further to this a diphthong is two vowel sounds recurring back to back in a word, for example "æ" or "œ" - Aegan Sea, and Phoebe being two modern examples of words where we are too lazy these days to use the correct symbol.
And the "&" sign is called an ampersand. I can write one correctly.
