There were so many contradictions in the squad selection.

Shaw, Dunk injured - Included in the Squad
Guehi low on match practice - Included
Wharton - 15 top flight games - Included
Mainoo - 34 Senior top flight games

Maguire & Grealish - Injured, Sent home.
Branthwaite - 38 games, this season alone, yet not enough experience.

Bizarre in so many ways. He's gambled heavily on the defence and whilst there could be some bias on my behalf, I fail to see how be can't see the quality of Bramthwaite.

There's a huge chance he and Quansah become the centre half pairing for a decade. Give the lads the experience of it instead of muck like Dunk or shoehorning Toney/Watkins/Bowen in.

Pains me to say it, but that squad looks questionable at the back and lacking enough menace up top to overcome the question marks. It will deploy real attacking threat, but I question what it has coming off the bench to make a key breakthrough.

I'm concerned that top resistance can 2-1 a.e.t. that squad if it stays healthy at the back, and God help them if they don't.

Apart from the forwards, that England squad doesnt strike me as one of the strongest in the tournament.

Only France and MAYBE Portugal have what appear to be a flawless squad with no weak points. England’s is definitely one of the stronger squads, however the manager is by far the worst in the competition.

There are levels to management obviously, however I feel like Southgate’s level is that of a pundit cosplaying as a manager. I genuinely don’t think you’d find a more tactically clueless coach in the top 4 divisions of English football. I can’t put it succinctly enough into words how lowly I rate him. I think he’s a truly awful manager, worse than anyone Everton have ever had in my lifetime including Lampard and Benitez. England have absolutely no chance of winning anything while he has any semblance of control.

Not sure you can really say this given how close they came last time…But yeah, he seems quite out of his depth compared to some of the others in the competition

I can and will say it mate. We have had incredibly fortunate tournament draws and the quality of our players has carried us through naturally against players that are nowhere near as good as ours. As soon as we’ve come up against a team that is similar in quality to ourselves, and require the marginal gains to edge our way past them, we have fallen short every single time. Southgate is simply unable to see things unfolding in front of him on the pitch and react in-game.

He specifically lost us that final against Italy. We mustered up ONE shot on target in 120 minutes, and then he thought it would be a great idea to bring on two young players in the 119th minute completely out of the cold to take the crucial penalties.

The only hope we have of winning a tournament under Southgate is if we have another year where we draw bums all the way through, and then somehow get bums in the final as well.

I agree with you on pretty much all of this. Just saying that last time did ultimately end up being a coinflip situation to win it.

Being mostly at home last time also helped immensely IMO, as did being awarded an extremely weak penalty against Denmark that proved decisive... He won't have that home advantage this time around and I'm expecting a QF flameout.

Stones possibly injured, Dunk picked up a knock. Konsa seems to be the only centre back who hasn't had some sort of injury this season. Not picking Branthwaite continues to baffle.
