A footballing country known more for hooliganism than football. They have a similar population to Spain and yet have achieved precisely nothing at major tournaments since 1982. They are the biggest paper tiger in European football, a country with a great football tradition seemingly incapable of producing much more than a team of large grocks to compliment one world-class player - their only world-class player since Zbigniew Boniek. A disgrace.
That was 30 years ago though. Bulgaria and Romania has been pretty poor since then too. Poland produced some decent players in that time, the likes of Juskowiak, Kowalcyk, Krychowiak, Nowak, Citko (fleetingly) and a bunch of goalies etc, as with most of them though there was a massive drop off between the decent players and the ones that made up the rest of the squads. Of course back in the day a lot of East European teams were made up from 1 or 2 clubs from their domestic leagues so they tended to play well together.Agreed - but even Bulgaria and Romania - far poorer nations - have produced brilliant players and teams in the interim. Certainly the Czechs have.
I found them quite amusing when the likes of Polster was playing for them. Think they qualified for a second round of a world cup once without winning a game and only having a lead for like 2 minutes in the three games. They were properly horrible.Austria are about due another good side. They had the Wünderteam of the 1930s, Hans Krankl, Herbert Prohaska, and Walter Schachner's mob in the late 70s/early 80s and have been as pointless as Poland since.
They were awful. To be fair to Toni Polster, he was probably the exception that proved the rule of how awful they were. I'm actually struggling to remember another Austrian here who was any good...I found them quite amusing when the likes of Polster was playing for them. Andreas Herzog would be the other one. They were awful. To be fair to Toni Polster, he was probably the exception that proved the rule of how awful they were. I'm actually struggling to remember another Austrian here who was any good...
Conversely I think them going abroad too early can be a detriment too. Who was the young lad who went to Leicester and ended up barely doing anything? It's starting to improve for us though. Almost every year we have some decent youngsters going abroad early.
In the 90's and early 2000's there were almost none.

That's the fella. Apparently back in Poland at Legia Warsaw now.Kapustka. Made his debut v us.
True, let's see what he has.Massive second half ahead. Lewandowski will come on, hopefully he's got something in the locker, but he's always disappointing at tournaments.
Ah yes, I forgot about him. He made a fine career in Germany. Was a top Bundesliga player.Andreas Herzog would be the other one.
