Roberto had three games. He sailed too close to the wind. Relying on Romelu has done for him in the past - and it did again today. In the end, Martinez has been comprehensively exposed and Lukaku has, basically, defined his career in one day.

Why did the best manager in history decide to play him then? Didn’t he also know what a bottler he was?

They weren't the "best international squad". That's a myth. They were the "most recognisable international squad to Premier League audiences".

That's not to say they weren't richly talented. But they were unbalanced and never had the right coach to get the very best out of them. Wilmots and Martinez were mediocre appointments.
