I haven't a clue why he's finalising his squad today when FIFA allow him until early June. Given the number of players who have dropped out through injury you'd have thought he'd have taken the opportunity to look at some other young players over the next couple of weeks, rather than take players like Livermore, Delph, Defoe, Cahill, Young, Smalling etc, plus the likes of Lallana who has only started 2 matches all season and has been out injured again since early April.

Realistically, we're getting out of the group but not going past the quarter finals. So let's use this as an opportunity to give some younger players some experience. Loftus Cheek I think will make it, but there are other young players like Alexander Arnold, Tomori, Cook, Roberts plus our own Lookman and Holgate who could be given wild card squad positions rather than the above no marks.

We have some good young players already in the squad, but Southgate needs to realise there was a whole generation of England footballers who were simply not good enough. Ditch them and take some extra youngsters for the experience. It won't effect how we do, in fact it may even make us better. Remember Germany in 2010, the same group players went on to win the cup 4 years later.

Personally I'd have taken Jack Wilshire too. That midfield is totally bereft of any guile.

I'd def have liked to see Lewis Cook in the squad. Hope he makes it.

Not if Delph and Livermore are in he won't. That group of central midfield players, Henderson, Livermore, Delph and Dier is the poorest I have ever seen for England in a major competition. Dier is Ok in the holding role but there's zero creativity in front of him.

Rumour is that Livermore will be standby according to the guardian

I would go with this starting XI fore the first game probably

That squads not quite as bad as I feared. At least Livermore and an unfit Lallana didn't get in.

Seems very top heavy with defenders for me. Picked 8 plus they have Dier that can play CB and Delph can play LWB out of the midfielders.

You can tell from the squad that he is going into the tournament with a back 3, and I couldn't argue with that given our distinct lack of quality midfielders.

Yep, as good as it can be I guess. I have a couple of gripes with it. I'd liked to have seen Cook in there and not sure TAA is ready. Also not sure about Welbeck. But overall it's ok. Good for the last 16 which I think is the max this current group is capable of.

The Three Lions : each about as potent as Aslan was immediately after the White Witch dealt to him at the stone table.

Thats about right imo. Lack of English quality about, but nice to see change of attitude, Southgate not allowing the press/media to pick the squad.
