Can’t wait to see our 45 mill man dominate the midfield against Wolves for us. Oh no wait he’s another one of those midfielders we’ve got who people insist is class but doesn’t do anything in the game apart from attempt a few worldies.

Who else do we have that people insist is class?
Surely you aren’t referring to Gana or Schneiderlin?

He was our best player last season, although I agree that isn’t saying much.

People on here love Gana, Kante Mk II apparently. I just don’t know what he does. He seems to wait to arrive on the end of stuff and make things happen but he should be dominating midfield for us and pulling strings like the class attacking midfielders isn’t he league do for their teams. Ozil, De Bruyne, Eriksen etc. They all affect the way the team play. Gylfi struggles to dictate our play at all and for 45 Mill he really should be doing that.

Moutinho will run rings around him

The fee paid doesn't make him into a player he isn't, though.

If we wanted a player who dictated a game, we shouldn't have signed Gyfli. Apples and Oranges.

That isn't Gylfi's fault.

But, he does have to improve. However, I'm willing to give him more than a combined 110 minutes to see how he fits back into Silva's system.

I like Gylfi as a player but unsure where he fits in a Silva 4-3-3.

He can’t play across the front three as he’s lacking the pace needed.

Potentially he could play left or right of the 6 but then his attacking threat is stifled, though he can pick a pass & set piece delivery excellent.

Best suited to the 10 in a 4-2-3-1 or 4-5-1 or 3-5-2.

Still waiting to see how Silva shapes this team & how he wants them to line up. He might have to deviate away from a 4-3-3.

I don’t know what midfield set up you could have that would accommodate Siggurdson. We’re basically saying he’s not a midfielder but more of a second striker. One who has no pace and doesn’t score lots of goals. We’d literally be better off playing someone who could actually dovetail with Tosun there. Richarlison could play there and free up a spot in the wing for example. It seems Siggurdson benefits from the old argument of whenever he’s judged as a midfielder people say well he’s more about his end product at the top of the pitch and then when he’s judged as a forward they say he’s a midfielder.

It doesn’t matter what Silva does as Schneiderlin Gueye and Siggurdson play the same ineffective dross way everytime they take to the pitch. You can count on one hand the number of even passable midfield performances those three gave as a combination. Schneiderlin walks around by the centrebacks, Gueye normally isles around about 5 yards away from him ready to pass the ball back the second he gets it, then Siggurdson is usually 40 yards up the pitch hiding behind an opposition centreback with zero chance of doing anything. In the 40 yard are of space in between the opposition midfield usually occupy with ease as they stroll through us and put us under concerted pressure.

It’s a championship level midfield. A geriatric Rooney who hadn’t even played his whole career there had more midfield talent in one leg than this three combined. They are utter pony and should have been turned out by Brands and Silva. Honesty watching Rennes and Blackburn dominate them was both embarassing and unsurprising at the same time. God knows what premier league midfields will do to them.

Different level I preface; but a deep passing player can work well, a Pivote in Italiano cf Andrea Pirlo.

Gattuso/Pirlo
Gueye/Siggurdson

I don't think anyone is saying that at all.

He fits in behind the striker, but in that position I don't believe a team should be relying on that player to be the playmaker.

Yes, they should be creative, but the running of the game should come from somebody deeper.

Or, if like you say we could play Richarlison there, then move Gyfli wide left. He can play there just fine. He showed that in flashes last season - issue was he had Martina behind him so most of the time he was tracking back, doubling up on the opposite winger and then, when we did work it down that flank, he had nobody overlapping to allow him to cut inside and do something.

The few times Martina did overlap, he scored or created chances (Swansea at home, Huddersfield at home off the top of my head but there were more - although not enough).

He will fit in. But he has never been a player that runs games. So regardless of the price tag, that isn't going to change. People have to get their heads around that. It says more about the club's approach last season than it does Gylfi.

Nah, Sigurdsson can't do that I don't think.

I mean, he could slot in maybe, but I don't think he has the pace to cover if Gueye is caught out.

Get either a powerful, box-to-box player or a playmaker like Ziyech for that role.
