Four goals in seven games, on for 20+ and people moan more about the bad things he does like "not grabbing the game by the scruff of the neck"
Richarlison can’t be the only one demanding the ball. For all of Barkley’s faults, he’d carry the ball and relieve pressure on other players. Southampton is the only game where he was involved enough to influence the game without scoring. He won free kicks and was constantly involved in the build up. Need to see more of that as well

Just because others were poor does not mean he wasn't as well.

I didn't say that.

I said he was poor in the first half, he was just one of the less poor ones - the best of a bad bunch (well, second best, after Richarlison).

Second half he was excellent, crap pen aside.

Gyfli isn't a 'ball carrier' though. He isn't a deep lying playmaker. So people need to stop expecting him to be. It's absolutely 100% fine to expect more, but let's expect more from him at what he's good at, and not what he isn't, if you get me?

He is constantly involved in the build up when we get the ball up the pitch quickly. But if he's dropping deep to get on the ball, then we have nobody in the space that he occupies.

Ergo, it's why what the most important thing this team needs right now (with the players we currently have) is to get a midfielder in who can be the ball carrier, who can be the passer in a slightly deeper role. I'm hopeful it can be Gomes. Not in the same way Ross was, maybe, but in the way he can get the ball and pick a pass that Davies/Gana/Schneiderlin can't.

We look better with Davies/Gana because at least Davies tries to get it forward, even if he lacks the final application of it.

I agree with that and hope Gomes is exactly what we need him to be, but it kinda makes my point that he isn’t the best fit without a ball carrier. As long as he scores goals though, it doesn’t really matter.

Agree there.

Although I would say even if he's scoring I agree that he does need to do more. I just don't think that 'more' has to mean dropping everywhere like people seem to expect him to be.

Make better runs or maybe be more of an option at times in a deeper position, but then - like you say - it needs others to be switched on around him anyway.

I like him. I think he’s got a lot of talent and paired with a centre forward who could turn in 20 or 25 a season he’d be more highly valued. The rationale I gave for buying him was his set piece ability which does have to improve dramatically, we’re not getting a returning on that but today I was happy for him. Great to see him bag twice.

Made up that he’s starting to slot for us. Still don’t really know what role he’s playing but he’s definitely a useful player to have. I expect a lot from him given his massive price tag and he’s delivered today. Completely different player in the second half.

Agreed yes, barkley has more talent but I believe he's wasted it. He's a shadow of the player he should have been.

Barkley was horrible when he came on for Chelsea today. Made one good pass and nothing else. Gylfi can and will get better when this team finally gels.

Both goals were top drawer today.
The addition of Mina and Gomes should hopefully see him get even better. Minas threat from set pieces should make a difference.
