2018/19 Gylfi Sigurdsson

Keep seeing this comparison with Eriksen.
Firstly, Eriksen is the better player.
Not that's out of the way, Eriksen's influence on the game generally (3x more passes than Gylfi) might, just MIGHT, have something to do with the fact he drops so deep to get on the ball. Watching last night for instance, he continuously picked the ball up from the CBs.
Gylfi, whether the haters want to admit it or not, is being told by management to stay high up the pitch. So service in to him is imperative unlike Eriksen. If there is no supply line, which we can all agree isn't there given Gomes isn't playing particularly well and Gueye can't pass more than 5 yards, then Sigurdssen doesn't get the ball.
Alternatively, we should be able to get the ball to a front man who then involves our number 10. But our strikers, bar a couple of games, have been absolutely terrible.
THEN, living off actual scraps, Gylfi plays in Walcott at 0-0 vs Wolves (i think) who hits it bang at the keeper, and plays in Tosun vs Watford who is offside.
Where he has been poor recently is his general distribution. He's given away some of the easy passes too frequently. Oh and also he looks a busted flush when it comes to pressing.
But you're absolutely mad if you think
A) he should be marauding around the pitch given his instructions from Silva.
B) a playmaker doesn't need a decent number 9
C) that, given we are AIDS and he's contributed 9 league goals, he's the LEAST of our problems

It's easy to say he's the least of our problems given his goals but the team is built around him. I think he should be retained but it would be great if we finished this summer as a squad player rather than the most important player.

A lot of that absolutely nails it.

As I said to Dan earlier, he's absolutely not a playmaker. In fact he's pretty unique - and that's ironically his biggest weakness, because you need a unique setup to accommodate him.
I know i am a pedant but this is top of my list. Things are either unique or not - as in there is only one of them. If there were grades of uniqueness there would only be a binary choice, please.... don't qualify the word unique..... it awakens the demons in my head!!!!!

He said best football player mert, not top of the WhoScored bar chart league.

Goals and Assists mate, the only metrics that matter, Goals are clearly the most important metric to judge any "offensive" player.

If you looked closer at Zaha im sure his whoscored stats would be superb.

But its about productivity on the pitch.

Zaha is VERY good at breaking the lines, something that separates the good and the bad players.

If you’re looking at numbers on spreadsheets without taking into account what’s actually happening on the pitch, or even the context of the goals, then the numbers don’t mean anything. For example, Luka Milivojevic scored 10 goals last season and Sigurdsson scored 4. So if you’re looking purely at those numbers, who would you say the bigger attacking threat was?

Milivojevic, Iceland was utter rank last season.

Hes not been much better this season overall, but hes producing, if other players produced what he and Rico do we would be vastly better off.

Stats are useful for players we dont watch every week, I dont watch Zaha every week, I can only see what he produces, it doesnt mean Iceland is twice as good cos hes scored twice as many goals, it just means Iceland has produced more.

Zaha won the penalties, Milivojevic scored all of them, that ends that particular conundrum. It’s not an accurate comparrison, I like both mind.

He wasn’t though because he’s a defensive midfielder and scored about 8 pens. That’s exactly the point, goal and assist stats don’t paint a fair picture when looked at in isolation and away from the context of games.

Judging players based on numbers is what has got us into this mess and led to us spending so much money on players that just aren’t very good. Sandro is a good example, we bought him based on the fact he scored 14 goals in La Liga, I’m not having that anyone actually scouted him. It took about 3 games of real life football to realise he was one of the worst players I’d ever seen.

Your mate Big Oumz is another good one. His goals per minutes ratio tells us that he was one of the league’s deadliest strikers last season, yet I’ve never seen him successfully control a ball. Stats vs real life, real life always wins.
