The fans idolised The GV in that era rightly so -, yet Derek temple as a winger, & a part time no 9 - he scored almost as many goals as the GV in virtually the same amount of appearances for us ... a true star - The Catt had to stop the same European club twice from signing him when he came into our team with a firm NO - Derek would have received £100 a game a colossal amount in those days ...... The board thought they were eyeing up the GV & Roy Vernon -, but it was the young, talented Derek Temple they admired the most ......Derek was a true gentleman, lived in a corpy house in Dovecot, just around the corner from me. He was always very friendly and patient when we all surrounded him asking for autographs when we came out of school. Smashing player, lovely man.
He was ClassGreat winger better than the cretins we have now.
I think that was a player called Willie Bell. I think he ended up being some sort of clergyman ?I remember that Leeds game when that [Poor language removed] at LB tried to kill him. The ground ended in uproar and rioted.

Ding Dong lolIt was Bell, and I got my hand smacked for calling him what he was.
Yes Willie Bell, a right dirty bar steward and a lay preacher. There was a gentleman's hair product in those days called score, as a promotion exercise they were handing out little tiny tubes of them free outside the ground. The atmosphere was ugly anyway, but, after the assassination attempt on Derek by Bell, the place just erupted. As Derek lay on the turf below the Goodison road terrace, the whole pitch began to fill up with these hair product sample tubes.I remember that Leeds game when that [Poor language removed] at LB tried to kill him. P I have really never been in a stadium with such a frightening atmosphere as there was that day. The referee took both teams off for 10 minutes, in order to allow the crowd to calm down. He did himself no favours though by allowing Bell back on after the break and sending Sandy brown off for a bit of retribution. We did retribution in those days, you didn't want to get into a fight with those boys.
To lift the gloom ....
My older brother was there, that tackle was disgusting......Sandy Brown got studded by Giles early on down his chest - he just punched his lights out - it went hostile when poor Sandy got sent off.......I remember that Leeds game when that [Poor language removed] at LB tried to kill him. Giles was an animal Joey, a very gifted little player, but, a horrible little snide. By far the worst of that infamous Leeds side of the 60's. He was absolutely terrified of Johnny Morrissey by the way, he wouldn't go near him.My older brother was there, that tackle was disgusting......Sandy Brown got studded by Giles early on down his chest - he just punched his lights out - it went hostile when poor Sandy got sent off.......
Giles acting innocent Sandy showed his ripped shirt with his stud marks on his chest.....
