Happy Birthday Derek Temple

Yes, exactly as I recall it, I was in GSE stand for that one.
Both Bell and Derek came back onto the field and Sandy was sent off very early in the game, around the fifth minute or so, the FA seemed to like Everton then as much as they like them now because while Leeds got off scot free for their behaviour Everton were fined £250. Justice, don’t make me laugh!!

Used to have my ST in MS2 near Mr.Temple - I refer to him as Mr.Temple out of absolute respect to him. Great player back in the day and very humble whenever people talked to him - absolute top drawer Evertonian
You know what Andy, he was an international, a winning goal scorer in an FA Cup final and he was just like any other man in our area, he wasn't a big head and he always took time to talk to people who wished him well or asked him questions. Funny to think of now, but, imagine a player of Derek's calibre, living in a corporation house in Dovecot and taking time to speak to the kids who were going home from school and always pestered him if he was out in his front garden or at his car.

Football clubs and footballers had genuine roots in the local communities in those days and the game was much better for it. I know it's just the ramblings of an Everton Grandad, but, football has never been the same game since Sky and other broadcasters came along with their insane money and then proceeded to dictate how the game is run and when the games are played.

Excellent post RV and I 100% agree with you.

Yes, maybe we do hanker after the 'good 'ol days' before Sky and money took over to such ridiculous levels but, even when we were the 'Mersey Millionaires' every season began with far more clubs genuinely believing they had a chance to win the league than the 'usual' two or three these days.

Yes Willie Bell, a right dirty bar steward and a lay preacher. There was a gentleman's hair product in those days called score, as a promotion exercise they were handing out little tiny tubes of them free outside the ground. The atmosphere was ugly anyway, but, after the assassination attempt on Derek by Bell, the place just erupted. As Derek lay on the turf below the Goodison road terrace, the whole pitch began to fill up with these hair product sample tubes.

P I have really never been in a stadium with such a frightening atmosphere as there was that day. The referee took both teams off for 10 minutes, in order to allow the crowd to calm down. He did himself no favours though by allowing Bell back on after the break and sending Sandy brown off for a bit of retribution. We did retribution in those days, you didn't want to get into a fight with those boys.
Is right. I was there. The ref let them get away with murder (sounds familiar?). That was the day they got the 'Dirty Leeds' tag, which endures to this day. I was really peed off that they survived on the last day last season...

My old man always goes on about Derek initially playing for the Everton Colts team back in the 1950s,they played in the Bootle JOC on the pitches where the Giro/Santander in netherton are now and he held the record number of goals for donkeys years!!!
