could you answer an age old question please ?
why don't you spell arkansas with a 'w' instead of an 's' ?

is it therefore also pronounced kansaw city ? as i would hate to offend a local with a mis-pron.

I believe Arkansas is spelled with an 's' because when spanish explorers first met the natives in the area, the Arkansa tribe. The explorers used Arkansas as the plural form of Arkansa. There apparently was a big debate about the pronunciation of Arkansas in the early years of statehood. Thats my understanding of the pronunciation.
