I'm 31, so it probably has something to do with the Niners being a giant team during the 80s. (Joe Montana, Jerry Rice). I would always use them in video games, even before I knew what NFL even really was.

Niners were boss on Tecmo Super Bowl, like (that's the GOT translation). Red Wings are the best option in your area, but as a Stars fan I have a little bias/resentment against them.
