But why?

That's what I don't understand

Does that happen in other walks of life? I mean, would they not let someone get a VISA to work for WWE because they hadn't worked in Japan yet? (Weird analogy but it was the best I could think of)

Well it made it easy for me to understand.

Just rules I guess for some countries. And then to complicate things there’s that rule for ‘exceptional talents’ or something where they don’t need all that crap.

Either way, has this bloke got what he needs yet or what?

Code for "They're signing for one of the Top Six, so look the other way"

If there is no agreement between the UK and the worker's country of origin that allows free movement of people, yes, it would happen. If somebody coming from Nigeria wanted to work in the UK they would need documents proving their right to work. This is just the footballing equivalent. The international caps thing does seem like a strangely arbitrary way to discern the right, though.

But seriously though, if this guy actually can’t play for us yet cos of the rules, we may as well just get rid.

If he can I’m intrigued to see if he’s any good.

There's a lot of moving parts to consider in the event he doesn't get the WP this summer. Ultimately, IF:

- He is intent on playing for us
- The coaches see enough potential in him
- He is willing to extend his contract by 1+ years so his resale value doesn't take a knock
- He is likely to meet the 75% quota by next summer

Then I wouldn't argue with another loan.

Unlikely all of those conditions would be met, though - Silva doesn't exactly sound mega enthused by his potential arrival, though that could be a smokescreen because he is certain that Henry is the next... Henry.

Well. I've convinced myself. The lad's a living God.

As in, we're only allowed a certain amount of foreign players?

So if we move some of them on we can get him the permit then?

He needs to have played in 75% of his National Team's matches in the last 2 years I believe it is to be guaranteed one (obviously him missing out on the World Cup was a big blow for this to happen).

You can also be granted one if a club makes a case that the player is an "exceptional talent", this is far more open to interpretation as it granted both Watford one for Richarlison (which has been proved correct) and they granted Leicester one for Andrej Kramaric (who didn't even last 6 months there).

So it is a bit of a farce to be honest.

Its a close one. From what I understand there are 4 ways to get approved. There is automatic qualification if he plays enough international matches, which it appears he hasnt. Option #2 is their Part A schedule, option #3 is their Part B schedule, and option #4 is an exception.

He needs 4 points from Part A, and whether he has them is all about whether his transfer fee, or his wages are at 50th percentile of qualifying players. How he would get points:

1. 1 point for playing in a top 6 league, as defined as "a top 6 european league which provides the most players to the top 20 squads in FIFA world rankings". The top 5 are obvious, so then the question for the 6th league is, is it Turkey, Portugal, or the Netherlands. I would bet the Netherlands, but its all about transfers to the top teams. So no idea who it actually is
2. 1 point for playing in the group stages of a Continental Comp, which he did.
3. 2 points for 50th to 75th percentile of wages to qualifying players, or 50th to 75th percentile of transfer fee. No idea if he made this.

If he doesnt get 4 points in part A, which only changed this year with points for #2, he moves on to part B where he needs 5 points? He would get points:

1. 1 point for transfer being between 20th-50th percentile of qualifying players. That should be an easy 1 point.
2. 1 point for wages between 20th-50th percentile of qualifying wages. That probably is another point.
3. 1 point for players club in secondary league, and played at least 30% of minutes. Thats 1 point.
4. 1 point for playing in the group stages of a Continental Comp, which he did. Thats 1 point.
5. 1 point for participating in 60% of Nigerias Comp International matches for WHICH HE WAS AVAILABLE FOR SELECTION, or his association being a semi-finalist in the Africa Cup of Nations in the past 12 months.

Last year he didnt have points from european matches, keeping him 1 short. This year, he does, and while injured, the leagues specific rules on this state matches where he was injured are excluded from the percentage, meaning he should meet that easily.

So according to their rules, he should get a work permit.

Isn’t it a very bad visa or a work permit rule? I understand it’s a broader rule for everyone in UK but for Football they should allow free visa especially since top clubs are ready to sponsor it. These young African and Brazilian players turn up for clubs in other country and are then sold to EPL at absorbitant prices. It’s only detrimental to English football economics.

I'm really confused as to what it is he actually needs to do to get a work permit

Surely the fact that he's a professional footballer that a professional football club want to hire to play professional football in the professional football league that operate in is enough?

I mean, what are the authorities worried about exactly? Do they think he's going to do some chartered accountancy on the side and not declare it or something?

I’ve never understood it. Surely the country would make a fortune off the taxes he’d be paying. It’s bizarre.
