The Trident I (C-4) missile fits in the same tube as the Trident II (D-5). The recently went through a life-extension program, probably to replace the solid rocket fuel propellant (which degrades over time). There is no replacement missile.

The differences in the C-4 and D-5 missiles, is the D-5 is significantly bigger and heavier, as such needs beefier gas-generators (to flash more water for launch), different fire control systems. They fly faster and have a longer range and are more accurate, ie pinpoint rather than within 10 meters.

The Ohio class subs have been around for a while, the first USS Ohio rolled out in the late 70's and was commissioned in the early 80s. Like I said they have had thier life extended too, so they will still be around for a while yet. Worth noting, the carry 24 missiles and are the 2nd biggest Submarines ever built (after the Soviet Typhoon SSBN).

[tour guide]The USS Florida's keel was laid on the occasion of this nations bi-centennial, July 4th 1976.[/tour guide] ;)

Is this what you are talking about Suits?

On 14th March 2007 The government of the United Kingdom won Commons support for plans to renew the UK's nuclear submarine system. Between £15bn and £20bn will be spent on new submarines to carry the Trident missiles. The fleet will take an estimated 17 years to develop and build, and will last until 2050. More than 90 Labour members of the Commons voted against the proposed upgrade to the missile system, and the vote was only won with the support of the Conservative party

If so, I have no idea about this.

Some youtube vids of missile launches.

Trident II missile launch:

HMS Vanguard launch (It is funny, the missile compartments are identical to US subs, so I recognize it well):

And watch this one so you can see the enclosure detonate and the missile travel to the surface. Same footage as the first one for the above surface portion, and the beginning is lifted right from the movie The Hunt For Red October, starring a Russian Typhoon (And Sean Connery ;) )

something else you don't see everyday

some of you may have seen this before, but what the hey, a bit of background:

As part of the general pissing contest in the early days of the occupation of Iraq, various units were vying to demonstrate their prowess and mobility. This led to one Junior Officer in the Royal Artillery having the bright idea of filming a couple of his squads performing amphibious landings. His Senior NCOs weren't overly chuffed with the prospect and made sure that the rigid raiders came on to a bit of land that had been 'prepared' for the event...

needless to say, the RA spent pretty much all of their time on dry land these days :D

Brilliant Blair. My nephew has just returned from Basra his only only comment about the place is a [Poor language removed] hole inhabited by [Poor language removed]:o

was he still billeted at the airport? It certainly wasn't the Ritz. To be fair, the majority of people down there are sound, as with anything else, it's the demonstrative minority that creates the nasty climate. Albeit I was there in slightly happier times immediately post invasion/liberation (catering for the whole spectrum, from Rob to Tx :D )

Brings back memories. I was attatched as a combat vehicle electrician with 40 Reg't RA in Hohne, Germany for 2 years before they exchanged with 7RHA and they returned to Topcliffe. I did 6 months in Bosnia with them also.

He was at the airport, Sgt with RAF Reg, patroling perimeter fencing and checking/guarding roads to and from the airport. booby traps everywhere apparently, he is not the type to overstate the problem. Lost two mates while he was there, hates the ragheads with a passion.

as much as i do or dont agree with a certain euphamism (is that the right word and context?) 'rag heads' is a touch incendary. richard reid is a bellend and he never got near a turban.

Suits I agree with you but that is the euphamism the troops use, obviously with more reason than we have:mellow:

The term Raghead is a common euphemism in certain classes of fiction. Does the term Towelhead seem a little calmer Suits.

NO

im not picking a fight, i have made my point, and i think made it nicely.

I was taken to goodison the first time for me by an asian lad, and hes a sound geezer.

I think a little perspective is called for as generalisations have a tendency to sweep... the situation out there is remarkably crappy, which is a shame because it started out only a little bit crappy but was allowed to degenerate... but that's for an entirely different and far more emotive thread.

Both sides of the fence treat each other with a hell of a lot of suspicion, and it's not helped by the fact that while Mont's nephew was risking his arse patrolling the perimeter, insurgents in Iraqi Police and Military uniforms would be strolling in and out of the main gates.

The use of the term Raghead isn't particularly pleasant, it's not a particularly pleasant term, but then military types can have a tendency to use many such unpleasant terms withou neccessarily being fully paid up members of the BNP or the Klan. Rest assured though, if they're heard using the term in public, they'd get bounced.

On another note, 'Raghead' isn't a term used to describe muslims (i.e. Richard Reid) or any of the billion or so inhabitants of the subcontinent, it refers particularly to the Arab world, as a more derogatory version of 'Towelhead'

Next week's words from the Prince Phillip Lexicon are Sambo, 'Darkie', and Slanty-eye

and Suits, you're entirely right to object, if you think the term is inappropriate, the more people do, the less it gets used

From Rob to TX.

You've pretty much got everyone in between then if we're the bookends.
