Player Valuation: £10m
Capello was unlucky, losing Ferdinand has been a big issue. Promoting King to the first team was required because he has/had a bit of pace which Terry doesn't have so he was the obvious replacement. Terry to cover the bigger less mobile attacker and King to pick up the small quicker attacker.
Terry
King
Carragher
Dawson
Upson
Only King in that list has a burst of pace, so with him out the England defence is troubled. Why didn't Lescott go? A player that has proven himself capable at left back as well as center back.
So with no real pace in the center of defence, England will have to play to their strengths, that is what Beckenbauer has foreseen.
Out of the squad he has Capello should pick
James
Johnson Dawson Terry Warnock
Barry
Milner----Gerrard----A.Cole
Rooney
Crouch
Cole has been dynamite for Chelsea this season, best LB in the league, delivering quality from the left for Drogba and Anelka in the PL and Europe.
Using Rooney in the attacking midfield position means he is not left out wandering as the sole striker, he can join play up and run around in midfield when we are chasing possession.

Ledley King has got a bit more than just 'pace' mate. A fully fit Ledley King can be as good as the worlds best defenders.

Im glad in one way that Baines didn't go, its making sure that he's going to be fit next season as he'll be the source to most of our goals.

The team should be:

--------------------------------Hart--------------------------------

Johnson----------Dawson-------------Terry--------------A.Cole

Lennon-----------------------Barry-------------------------J.Cole

--------------------Lampard------------Gerrard------------------

--------------------------------Rooney----------------------------

This is Englands last real chance at winning a trophy for a while I feel. We need some form of re-invention like the Spanish have had. When we beat Germany 5-1 in 2001 they were going through a transitional period of older players coming to the end of the international careers but have been efficiently replaced with a team that is typically strong. We havn't changed since then. Our system, tactics and even players are still the same. Cole, Gerrard, Ferdinand, Heskey, Carragher all played in that game and were picked for this squad, Beckham also played and would of made the 23. Theres also players that Fabio Capello may have still considered taking as back up such as G.Neville, Campball, Scholes or Owen from that night. I'm not suggesting for one minute that those players arn't still capable of doing a job for England but I am extremely concerned that we have very little in the way of youth to replace them.

We have become predictable, maybe thats the reason Sven took a very young and inexperienced Theo Walcott to the last tournament we needed something else to freshen us up. It's easier for our opponants to second guess our team because it hasn't changed and we have very little to change a game from the bench when things arn't working on the pitch, we now have to rely on that one opportunity like Heskeys one on one last Saturday to win a game. We don't keep the ball like the Spanish, Argentinians or Brazilians can in the final third, we struggle to pass our way out of defence like the Dutch, Germans and even the Chileans can.

We need to really surprise teams and take risks, if were to progress. Next game i'd start very offensive, pack the midfield and allow the fullbacks freedom of the pitch with Barry sitting deep, Creation and Flair of Gerrard and Joe Cole in the centre. Rooney in the hole, thats were he's best not having to chase flicks on from Heskey dropping deep and giving him little in terms of a 'give an go' outlet. Two strikers in front Rooney being Crouch and Defoe.

James

Johnson Dawson Terry Cole

Barry

Gerrard J.Cole

Rooney

Crouch Defoe

We do have great young prospects, and some of those 23 in South Africa are young as well:

- Jack Rodwell (19)
- James Milner (24)
- Joe Hart (23)
- Wayne Rooney (24)
- Theo Walcott (21)
- Ashley Young (24)
- Jack Wilshere (18)
- Aaron Lennon (23)

Players like Baines, Glen Johnson and Darren Bent are 25, they've still got years in them.

Plus there is the likes of Daniel Sturridge, Fabian Delph, Ryan Shawcross etc. they make the cut.

Plenty of young talent! Even some of the older lot in that bunch like Rooney still have another 8 or so years at their best.

What about Adam Johnson? He's like 23 or 24

Don't get me wrong there are some great young players there but i'd be surprissed if Walcott, Young or Bent really perform for England again, they play at the top level week in week out, they're passing the point of being 'potentially' great players. we need to get younger players into the squad soon and not many other than Milner are breaking into it. I personally Don't think Delph or Sturridge will have any bearing on an England squad soon. We havn't seen a world beater that would get into the likes of a Spain or Argentina team since Rooney. I don't profess to know what we need or what's right for England but there's a feeling we need something we really havn't got.

Rodwell is the future of England. He can do what not many other English players can do....He can be a defensive midfielder, or attacking one. He's only going to get better and better too. Future England captain right there.

I would agree with that rodwell is blossoming into a fine player, almost rolls Royce like distinctly elegant amongst others his age and even his piers. England need more of that.

Adam Johnson should have made the trip. Rodwell should be considered next time as with Sturridge. James Milner is ok but I never understood the fuss about him definitely has no wheels. There will be some surprises coming through the ranks. England will be fine in the upcoming years.

The problem with Sven is that everybody said that he was as starfu$$$r. Sven always started the most popular players no matter if they were square pegs in round holes. Beckham's, Lampard, and Gerard were always going to be in the starting squad no matter what.

All Capello had to do was to earn his money was tell lampard and Gerrard was that I'm starting one of you because you've been together and won F$#k all.

As far as the CB position England has one of the deepest crop of CBs in the world however once again Capello goes for the shirt instead of the player. What was wrong with Jags Dawson and Upson. Jags hasn't played much this year? Bollucks, and he was arguably the best CB in the prem the year before. Who wouldn't want him in the side? Dawson was spectualar this year and Upson had another solid season. Yet he went with Carragher the sole reason being that he plays for a "big" club. A player who Rafael had to banish to RB because he was so much inferior to Skertel??!! and some Greek league animal.

We in the US seemed to get along just fine with 2 unfit CBs both who having played this year one of which plays in the Championship so you get no sympathy from me b/c rio is hurt.

Plus Rio is so great and cannot be replaced? Granted he's good but he's also prone to some serious head scratching gaffes something a team cannot afford in a knockout tourney.

You look at a squad like the Italians and they have the foresight to sit a Totti on the bench in the WC because his style doesn't match the team. There is a reason why Italy despite not having England's talent wins and England doesn't.

England are [Poor language removed], that's the problem right there.

And once Rodwell gets into the team the bad tits of a media will ruin him and turn his head to move to a club they consider more fashionable.
