How to solve a problem like Toshiba

Hello.
Would anyone in Toffeeweb know how to get a a Toshiba laptop up and running again?
My daughter's laptop has a black screen and won't reboot or start in safe mode. Ive tried the reboot disc but to no avail and just get the screen all the time.
The laptop makes all the noises as if it's starting up but nothing.
Any suggestions would be welcomed.

also when it is completely working again, you need to remove all anti-virus, firewall etc and spend a week downloading stuff, it tweaks the performance apparently. you need to have autocomplete turned on and all your details entered, passwords etc for the most noticable results

Any chance you've accidentaly switched it to an external monitor which would turn off the laptop screen ? holding down the Function key and pressing F4 at the same time is the toggle for that.

I tried it in on external monitor and it still wouldn't work.
However the problem lies with the lid settings.
