didn't blame him for the goal as I don't believe he could have got near it but more than once he played poor passes to the back 4 and put us under pressure, decision making was awful.

I did not at first, but on MOTD2 TH was stood outside the 6 yard box no on his line - DM in fact looked around to our goalkeeping coach & glared to I assume say where was his positioning in that - if he had been further back he would haved save the shot.

People saying he's doing fine after 3 games? Didn't know making regulation saves makes you a good keeper. Pretty sure that's a keeper's job. We've been dominating possession in these games so its no wonder he hasn't a lot to do. And BTW his positioning was terrible for the Dempsey goal.

agree with this. he has been better of course, then again he hasn't had much to do so it's difficult to say whether he's back on form or not. Just mentioned it in another thread that i may have been nit-picking about his positioning, but it does happen more than once. The positioning for the arsenal goal was terrible imo, if he stays on his line there is nowhere walcott can put it, as it is it takes another wicked deflection and spins over him, to a lesser extend yesterday but still, maybe it's just me so i'm not going to bang on about it

Positioning was fine for the goal. The alternative is to sit back and give Dempsey more of the goal to shoot at, and give Spurs more space in the box to pass. I think most have lost all objectivity (in both directions) by this point when discussing Howard.

Agree with this, i'm no goal keeping coach but i wouldn't have thought many goalies would have been stood on the goal line in that position. just bad luck.

Not sure many are blaming him for the goal.

I think he's suffered other "bad luck" goals which really weren't bad luck at all, just bad goalkeeping, and perhaps that is where some of this angst stems from. But I don't know what world people live in where they expect a PL goalkeeper to constantly stand on his line in case a shot takes a crazy deflection and loops over his head.

He did fine yesterday, the only mistake he made was one pass to Ossie that put him under pressure, which was luckily dealt with by Gibson and he made up for it saving the free kick. People just love to hate him, nothing he could of done for that goal, deflections are bull**** for keepers
I don`t love to hate him. He never had to much to do yesterday save wise. He did give a few poor passes to our defenders which put us under unecessary pressure a few times though.

As a former keeper, I'll agree with this. Either he can play off his line, cutting off angles and making the goal significantly smaller to aim at or he can stay on his line and offer up more of the goal. The odds of being beat by the perfect chip or a deflection that can both make it over the keeper AND under the bar are FAR less likely than giving world class players a full goal to shoot at.

Yes, I'm American, yes I like Tim Howard, but seriously, there is no reason to complain about him after that game with Tottenham. He (like much of the rest of the team) played very well.

I also observed the one where spurs hit the bar & TH was again outside his six yard box - no one is saying stay glued to his line, but he seems to daydream at times the time he could have helped Coleman out in the 2nd half springs to mind hessitated & Coleman had to dribblethe ballpast the attacker to then pass back - TH daydreaming again!
We do need another keeper to push him for his position in Jan!
