Ever been hypnotised?

Know anyone ever been hypnotised?

Know how to hypnotise people yourself?

Fascinating or a load of bollocks?

I've seen a few stage acts doing the 12 people in a row all doing stupid things and that is hilarious but I'm still skeptical.
I saw a Derren Brown show where he was on stage doing his thing and this young girl is onstage after being pulled from the audience. He is speaking to her and laughing one moment, then he grabs her hand and sticks it to her face and in the next second she is 'under', just like that.
He doesn't say anything strange or anything but she is obviously affected and does as she is told.
It's just mad. Part of me still thinks its all BS though :P

Went to one once to help me stop smoking. He couldnt hypnotise me and it didnt work. The [Poor language removed] put me off when he told me he can bump into people in the street who he'd hypnotised and and say one word that would put them back in a trance. I think this guy was a bit of a nut and I've never tried sinse. Wouldnt fancy dancing around a shopping centre entertaining everyone and not knowing. [Poor language removed] that.

Makes you wonder if he'd met with the Everton first team lately?

From what I gather about hypnosis, it's all about how susceptible the subject is to the power of suggestion. The media, unfortunately, play up to the image of hypnosis being a trance-like state in which a subject can be ordered to do whatever the hypnotist desires. This is a false image, and any hypnotist that says otherwise is lying or deluded.

In other words, those types of shows on TV where a gang of people roam around a stage clucking like chickens, barking like dogs and crying like babies are the result of eager-to-please types, that don't want to resist playing for the camera.

What hypnosis can achieve, though, is similar to meditation. If done properly, it can put the subject in state that allows for him or her to relax in manner that is similar to light sleep, when the mind is cleared of those little things that can get in the way of thinking. But like I said above, not all people are able to maintain such a state of mind, at least not for more than a few moments.

When I was a nurse in the special hospital patients were often hypnotised as part of the treatment, they were definitely hypnotised whether it did any good is another matter.funniest thing I saw was while the patient was being hypnotised a nurse had to be present anyhow Joe was sceptical always saying they were all pretending so it ended up with a bet that he could not be hypnotised so after a bit of persuasion the challenge was taken up for £20 it took him less than one minute looking at the flame of a lighter,he never lived it down:lol:

You don't need to be in a hypnotic state to be open to suggestion. Your subconscious mind will notice prompting and direction even if you actively do not notice it. Your subconscious will then prompt your active brain to select choices based upon the suggestions given. You will think it was free will but it wasn't, it was a calculated decision, you were just not actively part of the decision process :)

PR companies, Casinos etc use techniques like this to get messages across to consumers/customers. It's not illegal though and I guess mostly harmless.

Stage magicians and mind readers have also been using techniques like this for years.

Exactly Chris, it is the power of suggestion ans not everyone is open to suggestion. It can help you psychologically if you feel nervous and can give you the confidence to do sonething you wouldn't usually do. Nothing magical, just tapping into human nature
